Giving DVC as a Wedding Present

Dean, can I be nosy....what prompted you to add your daughter's names? We have 3 children that I'd love to incorporate into our DVC some day. I was contemplating purchasing contracts for them, but after running our numbers (thank you for all your help and posts on this when I was asking), we don't feel selling some of our current contracts and repurchasing is a good value.

Thank you! This is great. We want to add our daughter too. We all go at the same time but currently we cannot get them AP with the DVC discount....plus it's going to be hers one day anyway! Oops one more question....do they reissue DVC membership cards or just send an additional one for her?

She gets her own card and separate mailings since it's a different address.

No problem, you're not being nosy. If it was a problem, I'd say so and I would not have posted if it were. We wanted her and her family to have access to the perks. She was already an associate. I have a 100 pt AKV but it's actually four 25 pt contracts. I contemplated just doing one but in the end did them all so they'd stay together.

I wouldn't want to give a gift with strings, certainly not one with both restrictions on how they can use it, and an obligation to pay maintenance fees.

Nice idea, but I'd highly recommend going a different direction.

I have to agree that if your plan is to give it with restrictions (no solo trips?) I'd say give the cash. Newlyweds can always use the money, especially when they're young and just getting started. I see no point in giving them points and then saying "Oh but you can't go without the rest of the family". You may as well just keep the points and continue making all the arrangements... The annual maintenance fees are another good point. Another bill they may not really want to be responsible for.

Wow that is a great present! I know that there is no way that I would sell...just to let you know, our wedding is in July 2010 if you don't think the kids would like that gift! Haha! I am sure that you will make the right decision.

To transfer the ownership or change the names you need a Right of First Refusal to record at the same time. DVC gives this automatically if adding or subtracting names or if transferring to an immediate family member without payment. We did this last year adding my daughter to our AKV deeds (4 of them).

It cost me less than 60 bucks but I did the deeds myself as quit claim deeds. I used a template word document from a FL law firm and the info from DVC which they'll email to you if you ask. It worked great. To use even a cheap closing company would be been $600-700 or more for the 4 contracts. It was easy, much easier than working through a closing company. Some have said that a quit claim deed might be an issue in the future as for getting title insurance if you sell, that wasn't a concern for me.

So smart Dean!! So did you mail your templates back to DVC? Was the $60 for the templates or to DVC? (Sorry for all the questions, this may be something I'll be doing in the near future.)

$58.50 for recording only. I found the Word Template on the web and double checked it with the format requirements listed on the Orange County website. Things worked perfectly. One caveat is you have to have 2 witnesses per signature. It can be the same witnesses for both and the notary can be a witness but have to sign separately as a witness, the act of notarizing does not serve the witness requirement at least in Disney's eyes.

They are 22 now and they are past the point where you can control what they do. Either give them the membership and keep your fingers crossed or don't. If you want to give them DVC points, discuss with them if that's what they want and if they'd use them. You know them and can get a feel for how the gift will work for them. If they'd rather have somethng else,then go with that.
They are young, probably not making lots of money and with any luck will soon have the financial burdens of children so perhaps giving them a gift that requires a lot of money to use and maintain isn't the best idea.
