Girls getting their "cycle" earlier and their height?

Idk I got my period for the first time at 12 & stand at 5'4" (I'm almost 17 & haven't grown in a year so I'm pretty sure I'm staying this height), my mom on the other hand got hers at 14 almost 15 & is 5'2". I mean I started earlier than my mom did, but I'm taller by 2 inches.

It may be true though, but that's how it ended up for me. :confused3

Again, my question is, how much more did you grow AFTER you started? That's the key info that everyone keeps leaving out. :confused3

I have heard about the growth hormones that they give to livestock (cattle, pigs and chickens) is causing children to mature much younger than ever before--scientific basis behind this I don't know.

It's totally logical if you think about it, they give animals hormones/drugs to have them grow faster-mature quicker so they get to market quicker....this is then the food we eat, of course these drugs would be in the animals tissue which then humans consume.

I got mine at 13 and I'm barely 5'1"... This theory says I should be taller. I WANT MY EXTRA INCHES D: D: D:

A doctor told me that girls will stop growing two to three years after they get their period. I started when I was 11 and my DD started her period when she was 12. I think I only grew two to three more inches after I started. My DD is still 12 so I'm not sure about her height, however, I do think she will grow another couple of inches.

About 2 inches, and I stopped growing at 13. When they discovered my bone cancer in my knee, the x-rays showed my legs had completely stopped growing. A "line" shows up in your growth plates. Then when I had a bone scan to scan for more cancer, they learnt I was completely done growing all over. It seems to be pretty accurate because I haven't grown since then, and I'm now 16.

And just FWIW, I'm the only short one in my family. The only short people in my ENTIRE family, both sides, were my maternal grandmother and her sisters.

There still is research into "environmental estrogens" from sources such as pesticide runoff in streams, birth control pills, and plastics. While the media does tend to blow things up and then move on, the matter is far from dismissed.
Sure, research "continues", as does some work on a possible effects of cell phone use on the human body. But academia and regulatory bodies have examined the core of the issues regarding so-called "disruptors" and found little "there" there. Often times the initial findings in one trumpeted study are found to fail one of the primary tenets of Science... their results are not reproducible by others. Even when the uses of certain plastics in things like children's toys or baby bottles are in fact "banned", it's noted by the regulatory agencies that it's due for precautionary (read "political" or "PR") principles rather than it being due to any specific scientific evidence to their use being actually harmful.

Oh, and sorry about your hockey team losing!
No problem.... you can't win them all! ;) We'll be back on top. Oh, and have fun with Pronger next season!

There's a reason why antibiotics are working less and less. They feed them to the animals we eat.

My DD is 9 1/2 and very developed in all aspects of her body. She began breast and pubic hair development just as she turned 8. (waiting to see if those words show up) She is now 5 ft 1/2 in. I am just barely 3/4 inch taller than her. She is also 120 lbs, which is an athletic build (but very healthy and muscular) for her height. We were at the ped a few weeks ago, and she felt that given her development her cycle could start any day. I was 11 1/2 when mine started.

I don't know about the height thing. My neice started at 12 - 13 years of age and grew another inch after she was 18. She's almost six foot tall.

I didnt get a chance to read all of the replies, but my DD8 is treated for precocious puberty. She started showing signs of puberty including a growth spurt at almost 7 yrs of age. The one reason the endo wanted her treated was because he said if she got her period early, she would not grow to her full adult height.
Now, who wants their 7 yr old going throught puberty?? Not us! She is treated with a medical implant in her arm that is changed once a year. It not only stopped her develpment, it reversed it.
She is able to grow at a normal rate like most kids do before we stop treatment and let nature take its course. She is tall for her age, about 4'8 and weighs 76lbs. She has no fat on her, it is all muscle from her year round competitive swimming.

We have no reason to believe it was caused by drinking milk or warming things in the microwave. She is labeled "no known cause". I have my own thoughts on what caused it, but the docs assure me I am wrong.

I got mine at 13 and I was probably 5'3.5. I'm now 5'7. I grew a whole 3.5 inches after my period first came. I just finished up the last bit I think in the past year.

My family though, all grew late, so I have that thrown into the pot as well.

Mine showed up regularly at 14 and I'm certain I had already stopped growing in height because I have been the same height since 7th grade. I'm only 5'3". If you figure out how to get those extra inches, you be sure to let me know.

According to this Pediatric endocrinology article, the growth that occurs after the onset of menses has to do with a certain steroid level that is in the body prior to menses. I wasn't able to cut/paste this page, but read the paragraph on the right column that comes right before the "male puberty" section.

Just one theory among many.

I'm 5'7", started at 11 (was around 5'). So, maybe I'm the exception to the rule. My DD is 8 and already 5' and hasn't started yet. She's been as tall or taller than her teacher for the last 2 years. I do have a 6'3' female cousin & 2 uncles over 6'5", so the tall gene runs in our family.

So far, no real signs of puberty in DD except the hormones!

haven't read the responses yet - but yes I heard -a ctually seems like it was in a book or mag about girls that are overweight getting their periods earlier.

In my fams case 1 girl (5'8ish) was 12 (18 now), 1 girl 5"6ish was 13.5 or 14 is 15 now

kNow 2 other girls that are 11 - both stand about 5'3 & nethier have started yet.

I was 12,(I'm 5'8 & wasn't overweight back then) My mom was 12

My MIL was 9 & was overweight (& short-she's just 5'1 or so)
My SIL(Her dd) is about 5'5 & started @ 11.

So what I read wasn't due to hormones in food but related to the weight of the child

Would you feel comfortable sharing that reason? As I mentioned in an earlier post, my DD began just before 8 getting hair and breasts, etc. The doctors and I went around a bit about whether to treat her, but decided she was close enough to the "normal" curve that we would let things take their course. Now, at 9 1/2 most people think she's at least 14. A few weeks ago, a receptionist at the peds tried to give us drivers license paperwork. Anyway, you piqued my curiosity. I hope your DD is doing well.

They finally put little trashcans in the stalls at my girl's elementary school. One of my oldest's greatest fears is that she would start, and have to walk out of the stall to throw stuff away with everyone seeing.

My youngest will be in 5th grade next year. They still do the talk in 5th grade, but it amazes me how many of the parent's of girls in her class haven't discussed ANYTHING. One of the the mom's in her girl scout troop glued the "period" pages together in the American Girl book about growing up.

:wave2: That's me...I didn't glue though - I taped -but only them tampon pages - no need to mention that for a few more years & YEP! I didn't discuss anything - no wait - I did have an inital talk summer of 4th grade but nothing again until the video in spring of 5th grade....

Well I was around 4'10" when I first started & I'm now 5'4" so I have grown 6 inches since the first time I started.

I was 13, and stand at 5'2" now...
dd is 12, and is 5'3", and just got 'it' last month... my ped. said she will most likely grow another 3 inches over the next 2-3 years and be about 5'6"... she looked at her growth chart and also said "if you had asked me years ago to guess her height, I would have said 5'6" "
