Girl Swallows 30 Magnets, Steel Balls; They Rip 8 Holes In Her Intestines

Ok, yea, they look NOTHING like candy. I would think that the first one tastes rather dull and I wouldn't even go back for seconds.

Wow. Just...wow.

I could understand a small child (a 3-year old, for example) swallowing one or maybe two little toys thinking they are candy. But even a 3-year old would stop after realizing they aren't candy.

I feel kind of bad for the girl because she'll always be known as the dumb kid that swallowed 30 parts of a toy thinking they were candy.

I just googled the toy. Those magnets don't look like candy at all! Were they HER toys? She didn't understand that it's a toy??? Or were they sitting in a candy dish? This makes no sense.

It's so sad that companies have to change/discontinue/put weird warnings on toys because of morons in the world.

Check out this (it's from a year or so ago.)

Some woman said her son swallowed 18 of the magnetix sticks. Here's a link to his x-ray. The woman, of course wanted to contact the comany so they'd pay her medical bills.

I just don't see how that can be real. It looks fake to me.

the first article is about a 3 year old...I wonder if that was his toy or not? I'm sure that they are NOT approved for 3 year olds! Why wasn't this child supervised?

The boy swallowed them seperately, but the magnets in them attracted the pieces to each other to connect in the stomach, so that's why it looks so big

But why are the up so high in his body? It just seems weird.

THat is pretty much where your stomach is--look at the x-rays from the girl in the op. There are some in her stomach and some through out her intestines. It looks like they took the boy's x-ray before they moved out.

Ah...got it.

Well, I still don't understand why anyone, even a young child would swallow large quantities of something like that. Maybe one or two...but not 18.

I agree. I can maybe see a 2 or 3 year old doing that but an 8/9 year old?? Why do I have this nagging feeling that the parents had something to do with this??? I hope not but that is what keeps popping into my mind. :confused3

we have this toy and my son received an add on set from his friend at his birthday so they are still being sold just with more warnings. My son likes to play with them but it is a toy with a special "hiding" place and he can play it and then pick up all the pieces and put it away. His 3 year old brother can't play it because of the hazard it poses to young children.

My take on it is that in this case is a child who may have done this for attention not realizing the harm that could happen and she is saying they looked like candy because she doesn't know how else to explain why she did it.

When youngest DS was 18 months old he swallowed something small like a marble but I wasn't sure what it was and I was so scared it was a magnet. It was a small bead but I was freaking out until it passed.

This girl is lucky to be alive and while it looks like she should have known better it happened so what can you do?

Isn't the pleasure of candy chewing it or letting it dissolve in your mouth so that you enjoy the flavor? There is no pleasure in just swallowing candy whole, so I have a hard time buying the candy argument. But I am glad she is OK.

I have to agree with the PP who said she probably did this for attention but didn't realize the danger she put herself in. No way did she think it was candy. She is old enough to know the difference and even her father said she was A and B student, so I wouldn't think she was slow. But come on, 30 of them?

The part that stands out to me is that it says they parents were in the same room but she STILL somehow ate 30 of these things? What did she do, chug them down? I mean, that may sound crude but how the heck did she eat 30 of these without the parents noticing? Heck, my cousin has 5 kids and they can't even get anything NEAR their mouths that is not food and she notices!

I thought the same thing. Sure, it takes a short time to swallow ONE...but 30? The parents must not may a lot of attention to her.

I watched the video and it kind of seemed the girl may have somewhat of a mental disability...now get all upset at me, I'm just saying her voice sounded like my cousin who was a little slow like that growing up. She wouldn't look at the camera either, maybe because she is embarassed??

Anyways watch the video and you will see the little girl speak.

I'm watching it right now and it's hard to say. While I do think she seems a little slow in the video...it's hard to say because a child not used to be on T.V. is probably going to act different than they would normally.

But that being said...no average 8 year old is going to think 30 of those are candy. It's just not going to happy. I think she may be a little slow or she really wanted attention.

Kids do stupid things. Why? Who knows, it just seemed like a good idea at the time. When your kid does something stupid and you ask them why they did it, what do they say? Half the time it's, "I don't know."

My son swallowed his cell phone antenna. Yes that's right, the antenna. It feel off of the phone so he popped it in his mouth. He was blowing it out and sucking it back in. I told him to stop doing it because he was going to swallow it. "No I won't." he said with a laugh. No sooner did the words leave his mouth and he did it again, when my daughter reached for it.......... Yep he sucked it back in and down the throat it went.

He was 15 at the time. Teens also do stupid things.

but I'm willing to bet he wouldn't swallow it on purpose. And definitely not 30 times in a row...haha.

Impossible to say, he only had one antenna. Thinking about it, I wish he would have had more, then I could have found out just how stupid my son could be :lmao: .

Back on topic though. Maybe the little girl thought the magnets felt good going down.
