how old are girl kittys usually when they start heat?

sorry. :o

She is 8 months old and acting very strange. Ive only seen this once in my brothers cat when I was much younger. Im pretty sure thats what it is, Ive been putting off getting her fixed till she was a year ( shes strictly indoors and boy kitty is allready fixed) I just wanted her to be old enough to make sure she was ok. I know they said I could do it at 6 months... it just didnt seem right.

Anyway, she isnt spraying, just kind of acting strange. moaning, walking weird etc. she isnt hurt.... anyway, help!

Sounds like she has "become a woman" to me! A few days after our cat started doing those things she was hanging from a window screen moaning at a boy cat outside like she was going to die. DH was trying to sleep, he was in Nat'l Guard and had drill at 5:00 a.m. She went to the vet the next day.

Sounds like she's in heat to me. My Vet told me they could go into heat as young as 6 months or even younger. We've had our females fixed between the ages of 6-8 months and never had a problem.

Good luck. It can be pretty annoying for the humans in the house.

LOL! Yep she is becoming a big girl. One sure sign is the loud meowing/moaning that will drive you insane. They also stick their butt up in the air...crouch on their front paws.

My Dootsie will be a year old February 18th and she has been in heat twice already. Its time to get her fixed soon.

Yup, same here! We have a horny cat!

She's 8 months old and my DD came in New Year's morning and said, "Mommy, something's wrong with Fluffy!"

Butt in the air, tail to the side, rolling around, meowing all over the house, rubbing up against everything that will stand still. She's an indoor cat, but tried to make a break for it one day. We caught her, thank goodness. She'll be heading to the vet soon, too!

Heat lasts up to 21 days a cycle, and generally occurs three times during the year.

What exactly are you basing this opinion on? Sorry to say, it is a much more dangerous surgery after 6 months. I spayed an in-heat kitty today, and it was bleeding (internally) all over the place. Their organs are a mess after they go into heat.

based on the fact that my Vet told me to wait until after she was 6 months old. That because she was an indoor kitty it would be safer.

Did you think I just made it in my head?

Get that kitty to the vet as soon as your vet says it's ok to do so, binny. Getting her woman parts taken out not only takes away the annoying heat behaviors, but also can have an affect on their temperment (usually for the better). Also..if they have no womanly organs, they can't get cancer of those parts later (which is almost always fatal). :)

Good luck with the kitty, binny.:earsboy:

It sure sounds like your kitty is in heat! Must be a difference of opinions from vets because mine always suggested that you do it between 5 & 6 months (I think around the time the adult teeth come in... I can't recall exactly been too long, but I do remember it had *something* to do with teeth ;)) They have said to do this then because it is normally before the 1st heat and doing it after has something to do with it being more complicated (again been too long, so I can't remember exactly why). Another big difference I have heard in opinions of vets is how young they will do it... some will do it as young as 12 weeks!!!! Good luck though, my friend never had her indoor kitty fixed and she said the mood like that lasted a couple of weeks. Wishing you and your furbaby all the best :)

Have always had our cats and dogs "fixed" before 6 months.

I've never heard of a vet recommending waiting for that surgery. That's very surprising. I think they do it as early as possible these days because it's much safer/easier on the cat, it helps to prevent some types of cancer, and it positively affects personality.

Note: I am NOT saying that you did anything wrong! You listened to YOUR vet.

However, I would get her fixed asap. I think that you have to wait until the heat ends, but it would be worth checking on that too.
