Ging Gang Goolie 2008, 23rd May, Tal-y-Bont On Usk

Yes Nat we had a lovely time, the weather was ok, we were lucky that is just rained when we were in bed. We got there Friday evening and went down to that cafe place where you and I wandered to in the rain, we had fish, chips and peas for £5.00, they also have a bar int there now, it was £2.00 a pint and £6.50 for a bottle of wine. We had a disaster in that the airbed punctured at twenty to three in the morning, so it was like sleeping on rocks! On Saturday, we went into Brecon which is six miles away and got a new airbed, we also found that they had Morrisons, which could be useful if we need more food, booze, ice etc. We planned to have a bbq Saturday night but the Asda charcoal was having none of it, so we ended up using a griddle on the gas stove. Yesterday, we wandered up to the Travellers Rest for lunch, we both has lasagne which was really nice, yesterday evening was spent outside the tent boozing and Ian bbq'd a few bits and pieces which was lovely, we had a really nice time, I have some piccies which I will post later or tomorrow.

had to :lmao: about the airbed Jules! never mins, glad it all went well, please can Ian fix the weather for that weekend?

I will get the piccies posted over the weekend I promise.
Three weeks today, Nat, Carol, Jen and Claire will be back from their hike on the mountain, the bacon will be sizzling and we may have sore heads. Ian and I are going to start work on the quizzes this weekend, we are hoping to find some tricky questions for the Welsh one.

I think that worked ok last year Nat, we also discovered a Morrisons just up the road, that we can use if we need to top up. The food was not bad at the site either, fish and chips, pork, steak, chicken etc, they also have a full bar in there now.

im not sure we will get much use out of the bar, we are hardly big drinkers :lmao:

will be taking orders soon for pasties, clotted cream, doombar etc!

um, Jules you forgot to mention yours, Debs and Tams partaking of the mountaineering

Jules,
I've taken a look at the plans for the DIS campout as they've developed on this thread. Your get togethers--last year's and the one being planned now--sound like so much fun. It's got me wondering though about camping in the UK vs. camping in Oklahoma. There never seems to be any discussion about the bears, wolves, coyotes, mountain lions or rattlesnakes. What's up with that?
Susan ;)

Gosh Susan, is this what we would really see in Oklahoma! Ian is quite interested in this, he seems to quite like the idea of seeing so much wildlife, which to me is a little scary. We have sheep, there are lots of sheep in
Tal-y-bont, when we went last week there were lots of cute lambs, by the time we go at the end of May they will have grown into grubby looking sheep.

Fortunately most wildlife is brighter than most campers and give us our own safe distance. Of course, some are lured close by the smell of intriguing human food. With snakes it's more a matter of watching where you're going so that you don't accidentally cross paths. I like the idea of your perhaps being menaced by little lambs on your campout. Kind of an Easter theme. Just need bunnies with colored eggs.

Oh, Jules, I didn't mean that to be insulting. Sometimes cross-cultural jokes don't work so well. From the description of the setting and action in the reports of last year's GGG it seemed to me that UK camping is more pastoral than what I'm used to where I live. And all things considered, with Matt's It's Five O'clock Somewhere rule, it's just as well you don't have to take into account bears and rattlesnakes, I think. Hope you have a ton of fun and wish I could be there. Hugs, Susan

You are not insulting at all Susan, camping in the UK is much more pastoral than what you describe, basically fields, normally a cafe / bar, some shower blocks and lots of opportunity to sit in the sun and drink. I don't think any of the men would be able to save us from your wildlife after 5.00pm :lmao: it's like Nat says we would be bear food. I am sure they would slaughter a lamb to throw on the barbie for us though. I so wish you could be with us too
