Gifts of Salmon

I always bring back gifts from my trips for family members and this year I'm going on an Alaskan Cruise so I plan to return with some salmon.

Where have you found the best prices? Is there other authentic "Alaskan" gifts I should consider?

First, as a note if you are from the USA and going on the Alaskan cruise, remember you have to go through Canada to get back to the USA post cruise. This means that that Salmon have to go through Customs. Make sure whatever you buy is allowed through, and always declare it!

One of the things we LOVED (and so did everyone else) was this Boysenberry Licorice that we got in Skagway. I believe we bought it at Richters of Skagway.

We bought our salmon in Ketchikan. There's a salmon market at the end of the main street under the big Ketchikan sign. They give you samples and have the best prices. You can buy salmon in cans or vacuum sealed. Both are approved methods for getting back home through customs.

We purchased at the same store pictured above and shipped it all home. It was much easier than having to worry about making room for it in our luggage.

You might also consider some of the handcrafted Ulu knives. Some of the local artists carve them out of various antlers and they're really lovely.

Just don't be deceived by the large boxes of smoked salmon that contain a tiny rectangle of salmon inside the box. I know several people (including my father) who thought they were buying enough smoked salmon for many people (since they over-price the boxes). You'll see these boxes in tourist traps all over.

We felt all the salmon shops near port were tourist trap rip-offs. You can get the same quality at home and canned salmon isn't much fun anyway.
