Gifts from co-workers...

What do you do when a co-worker gives you too much? Everyone usually exchanges $5-$10 dollar little gifts or certificates. My co-worker got me a pair of pajamas, slippers, a calendar, and scrap book stickers. I really felt awkward. I am not a shopper at all and I did give her $20 certificate, but what would you do?

I think all the people she gave gifts to felt awkward too.

I would just say, "Oh - you really didn't have to do all this, but thank you so much! It was very thoughtful of you.." Accepting a gift graciously is really the politest thing to do - even if it made you feel a bit awkward..

Also - you don't know what kind of "shopper" she is - she may be a real bargain hound - like my former SIL - and she could have easily gotten all of that stuff for $20 or less..

Every workplace has its own culture, and she may not understand the culture of your workplace yet.

A couple of jobs ago, I asked a co-worker what kinds of gifts our particular group gave to each other for Christmas, and she told me people went all-out--gourmet wine baskets etc. She was very inaccurate! So I overspent for her, my boss, and the other co-worker in our group. They all exchanged less expensive gifts than me. I was a little embarrassed, but just chalked it up to experience.

I would just thank your co-worker and not make a big deal of it.

Agree as well. She may also be "regifting". Can't say I've ever worked with someone that I would ever consider giving pajamas to...ew?
