Gifted DVC points - do we get discounts?

My in-laws gave us DVC points for our honeymoon and our trip is now booked, as are our ADRs. I am about 99% certain that the DVC benefits, namely discounts, do not apply to us but my MIL is very insistent that our room key will work like their DVC pass. As in, we can get the Tables in Wonderland card, discounted annual pass, discounts at certain restaurants/retailers... etc. I have tried to send her specific websites that detail what is required to get the discount but even with the TIW website (which states very clearly what is needed) she insists that we have the same benefits they have. She just sent an email with discount locations and it specifically says 'present DVC member ID and corresponding ID' right at the top. I'm assuming that means their DVC card and an ID that matches the name and address on the card.

I'll probably just let it go, but I just wanted to make sure I'm not missing out on some discounts just because I'm misinformed... or not reading between the lines or something.

Thanks!

Edit: I think I somehow posted this in the wrong place as this has nothing to do with purchasing points, so I apologize!

Using someone else's DVC points does not make you a DVC member. You won't be eligible for DVC discounts.

I don't believe your key card would identify you as DVC. Only members, if I'm not mistaken, get that designation. Just because you stay DVC doesn't make you DVC. Sorry.

No more KTTW Cards. Members need to show their DVC Member Card and a Photo ID to receive any discounts.

Congratulations! That is a wonderful gift. Have a great trip!

This. You get Magic Bands now. I have always been asked for my DVC Member Card and an ID when using DVC perks.

Sometimes you just have to wonder about some members, that they don't really know the rules. :sad2:

OP it's a good thing you came here and asked the questions. Gifting you points for your honeymoon is very generous. I know your future MIL only means well and wants you to have all the benefits they enjoy but I fear you would have been frustrated and embarrassed trying to use their membership as your own.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding and enjoy your honeymoon!
Where are you staying?

We're very thankful for the points! My husband was just completely ready to have his parents purchase a TIW card and Annual pass for us based on his mom's opinions and I had a feeling it could end up being a waste of money. And they've been members for at least 20 years!!

Our KTTW card when we went in previous years had DVC written on them, which I think is only stating that you used DVC points for the room. It's definitely not in place of the DVC member card but we got away with using it from certain cast members (specifically for a discounted Behind the Seeds tour) in previous years. Plus, his mom talked a CM into giving him a discounted annual pass last year when his ID was from a completely different state (so obviously not same household). When I went this March they seem to have cracked down on a lot of things and the magic bands definitely make it more of a requirement to use the DVC member card. Plus the fact that his parents will not be travelling with us and it seems like it's then no different than having rented points.

Anyway, thanks all! It helps a lot! I just always feel like such a Disney know it all when really it's just that I research EVERYTHING (Disney blog/forum addict right here).

Does your husband currently reside with his parents? If he still does, and his license has the same address as theirs, then he may be eligible for a discounted AP as children who live in the same household as their parents are still eligible..

And, once he had an AP, he'd be entitled to buy TIW...in order for him to get the discounted AP though, he'd need proof--some have sent their children with a copy of the DVC card and copy of their license to show same address.

Congratulations!!

If your in-laws purchase a TIW card they will be able to get a second card for an additional $50. This card could be in your or your husband's name. I'm not sure if it would be worth it to spend the extra $50 for the membership but, if so, it's an option.

Just back a few weeks ago. Every time I used my DVC card for a discount, they asked for my drivers license and they really looked at it.

I was surprised a little.

Same applies for passholder discounts, must show actual AP Card (or Discount Card shipped with Passholder MagicBands) and photo ID.

Thanks for the help!

Husband's ID does not show the same household - or even same state so it would be pretty easy to tell.

There was a time when Disney was pretty loosey-goosey about DVC member perks. Anyone staying on points had the "DVC Member" notation on their room key and that was often sufficient to get discounts related to dining, recreation and shopping.

But that has changed in recent years. Since the AP discount was introduced in 2005 the policy has ALWAYS been that the perk was only available to deeded owners and qualifying relatives living in the same household. A room key was never sufficient for the discounted AP.

Now that MagicBands have all but replaced the KTTW cards, there is no more "DVC Member" notation on room keys. Owners must present their DVC member ID card in order to receive discounts...and a photo ID is often requested to verify identity.
