Hi all! I'm planning my honeymoon down in Disney World for July and up to now had every intention of purchasing the dining plan. I've been crunching numbers and considering that my future husband does not usually do desserts, it looks like we could save money by not doing the dining plan. My fiancee likes the idea of the convenience of not having to carry extreme amounts of cash.

So.... can you use Disney giftcards for restaurants around Disney or only restaurant specific giftcards? I figure this way we could still do table service restaurants without having to worry about cash (if it's already on the giftcard we won't be thinking about saving money). Thanks in advance!

good overview here: http://www.disneygiftcard.com/where/walt-disney-world

They can be used at Disney owned/operated restaurants (and can be used for tips as well). We used them all over the place. Of course it's good to have some money in the bank account in case you want to go to T-rex or something (b/c it's so romantic for a honeymoon LOL) where it's not going to be accepted. :)

Another option for not carrying cash is to have "charging" on your KTTW card. (room card) You don't actually have to connect it to a credit card, you can give the front desk cash and then they will enable "charging" on your KTTW card up to the amount you have provided. I find this a great option so that we don't have to carry cash to the parks but also don't over spend and end up with a huge cc bill at the end of the trip.

But definitely ask the resort what the top limit is on the charges before they'll run the charges to the credit card. I believe there's a cap with different limits depending on whether you're staying Value, Moderate, or Deluxe.

If the limit is $300, for example, you can go to the front desk if you're getting close to that amount, and apply a gift card towards the charges so it won't hit the credit card first.

We did free dining once and thought it was OK. Lots of food and and we are known to knock back a good meal. We just felt too limited in our choices. The next trip we found the GCs at Walgreens and I bought them every week or two. $25 or $50 dollars even $100 a few times. This worked great for us-- it was like having the dining plan. We had everything paid before we left( I kind of estimated from menus on mousesaver) and we also could choose apps and drinks and not feel like we were paying extra like we did on the DP. We loved paying a little bit all year long. All the places we ate at took the cards HTH:)
