Gift threads - Stop the Madness!

I was posting this because I did feel there was too much abuse of the
gift threads. And for asking for big ticket items.

I am appalled at what happened to Califgirl. It's that kind of treatment I am
so sick of seeing here. The DIS is not about what gifts I can get from
others.

1. I don't like seeing people who received a gift trading it immediately.
2. I don't like seeing someone who trades rare items asking for the big ticket
gift items.
3. Those who create gift thread after gift thread as a recipient only make me
want to avoid giving to them, as they do come across as beggars.

I know it's easy to say, "Don't look at them if you don't like them."
I'm not opposed to gift threads for the right reasons. I don't like seeing
an obnoxious quantity of gift threads clogging the boards. It gives the
impression that anyone can waltz into the DIS and ask for items without
needing to work to get them for themselves.

It's getting WAY out of hand.

I have the feeling that "InMyOpinion" is really an alias. If that is true, I
would have liked to have seen the player try to assert those opinions as
himself/herself.

I don't think the gift threads are a good idea because of the ways that people abuse them.

I really think that if you are good you get good, in the game and in real life.

There are players that have no prayer of getting all the good things in the game, the might have school and restrictions on their computer time, maybe Mom and Dad are not going to take them the Disney. There are a lot of reasons. Those people are what the gifts were meant to be.

Now someone starts a gift thread and everyone comes out of the woodwork. Hey, free stuff I better sign up. There are people that have the ability to get the item on their own via trading. It makes me sad to see someone that has a lot of rare things asking for a gift like that.

I never have been on a gift thread because I fall in that catagory. I wasn't going to DLR any time soon to get the gold doors so what did I do? I took some of the other cool things I had and I traded for them. I think it would be wrong for someone like me to ask for anything! I wish others with trade rooms like I have would think that too.

That is what we are meant to do. Why else was trading part of the game?

There are people that have rooms full of rare and beta that are on the gift threads because if they get it for free, they can either trade it or keep it and not have to give up any of their stuff.

Everyone has a hard luck story, my sister, my kid, my friend. We all want the super cool things but I think that there are other ways to get it than asking and then EXPECTING to get it.

I gave up on the Everest thread I started. The abuse I got through PM was outrageous. People abuse things and it ruins it for the good folks.

I don't read them and it is certinaly looking like the people that can help with gifts are the ones that are not reading. Most of us just gift on our own without a list.

I give something away every day. I started that when I had good luck in the game and was able to get just about anything I wanted. I still remember the uncool days when I didn't have anything anyone would want. I don't give to anyone that asks though. That turns me off. I just find someone that needs something and pass it on. That pays off too. I remarked on a post that I couldn't get a Buzz pin, my in box within minutes had PM's with offers for codes. I can't tell you how good that made me feel.

So I say before you ask for anything try to earn it your self. Maybe through trading. It will feel better in the long run.

When I posted that I would create born in park characters, I had people PM me well after I had announced that I had already had 9 people (I originally said I would do 5). I know this probably won't go over too well, but the next time I do a Born-In-Park offer, I think that I'll have to limit it to people who have over 100 posts or some other measure of longer term Dis membership.

Lisa, that's actually not a bad idea...to limit by how much they've posted. It might give an indication on what their intentions on the board are.
