My 50+ male cousin just had surgery after breaking his hip so he is bedridden for awhile. He lives with his parents (my aunt and uncle) but my uncle just got out of the hospital due to some stomach problems and my aunt is in a wheelchair. Fortunately they will all be ok and I think are having some home health care folks come in and help them with the day to day stuff.

Since I live out of state from them, I really can't help them with what they really need which is rides to places and just making meals for them. I would like to send them something though.

Anyone have any ideas? I was thinking of ordering them some meals from somewhere but really don't know where. Help!

Thanks in advance

If they like to do crossword puzzles or any type of word puzzles, I would get them those type of books. When I had my surgery, my dad gave me a handheld Scrabble game. It really helped with the boredom.

I'm not sure what you want to spend, but if your looking for delicious food, try www.heavenlyham.com. They have great tasting hams, turkey, boxed type lunches, ribs. All are fully cooked and only need to be heated. They dependable, delicious and its safe to order from them on line. I have ordered from them in the past and did so with no problem. I even ordered there gift certificates for my mom, as they have stores all over. There really a good company and I've always been happy with everything I ordered.

How about a goody basket filled with things like snack foods they enjoy, puzzle books, magazines, chapstick and hand lotion or anything else that might make them comfortable.

Do you have contact info for friends/family near them? A church family, maybe? I'm just thinking that you might be able to contact them, tell them you'd like to provide meals, and get them the money and they could deliver things like Boston Market to them...

I know it's impersonal BUT practical, what about a gift card to their local grocery store or a restaurant they frequent, that they can either use to grab meals from, or call ahead and get?

That's hard when you're away! You could be completely IMPRACTICAL and send them cookies from Mrs Fields =)

Is it Schwan's food delivery, is that right? They have lots of premade meals, you could check out their website and see if they do short-term delivery... its pricey, but some people swear by the convienance! =)

Do they need help around the house -- hire someone to mow their lawn or something like that. I like the food idea, maybe you can call a grocery store and have pre-made stuff delivered.

Maybe gift certificates for national chains so they can go pick up dinner or groceries quickly??

Great ideas! I like the idea of a gift basket with puzzle books and games. Also having food delivered is a good idea.

Any others?

Thanks so much
