I am shopping for an almost 4yo nephew. Boy is very into trains but I think he already has every available train. Parents are getting him a tablet. He told me he likes dragons but I have no idea what I could get. Any ideas? Parents are not very helpful with ideas. They live in Florida but will be here in Michigan for the holidays. Driving home so space isn't a huge issue.

Lego Juniors. They are made for the 4-6 year olds so they come apart easier than regular Legos but are the same size. DD loves hers and DS loved Legos when he was little.

Legos are hit and miss IMO. Some kids love them and others have no interest in them. I have one of each.

My DS loved Imaginext at that age. I think they have some dragon toys. We had the Bat Cave (my niece plays with it now) and maybe a pirate ship???

My almost 4 year old daughter loves Duplos, legos, and arts and craft kits. She also loves Jake and the Neverland Pirates toys (especially the dress up stuff like swords).

I'd stay clear of Legos unless you know he likes them. Neither of my boys like Legos, and they have some beautiful and expensive sets that relatives basically wasted their money on.

Does he have the How to Train Your Dragon movies? They are really good and he might like those.

Imaginext has an Eagle Talon Castle themed collection which does have dragons. :) He is the perfect age for Imaginext toys. I bought the Imaginext pirate ship for my nephew when he was 3 and it was a big hit.

How about this do-it-yourself train?: http://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-...=8-1&keywords=melissa+and+doug+do+it+yourself

BOOKS also make wonderful gifts! :thumbsup2 My nephew (who is now 5) loved the I Spy/Search & Find type books from age 4 and still loves them.

Also consider a board game for his age group such as some of the games made by Peaceable Kingdom (Seeds for the Birds, Hoot Owl Hoot, etc) or the Sneaky Snacky Squirrel game by Educational Insights.

Yep. That's us too except we realized my dd liked them when she decided to put together the ones my ds received. There's no engineering degree in his future but perhaps in hers:)

I still think at 4, legos are a good idea. Most kids are introduced to them at some point and four is a great time. Unless you know he does not like them, I would consider a JR Set. I also am a big fan of the Imaginext toys and the playmobile sets. Knex makes a Jr set that is good and most kids LOVE tinker toys and Lincoln Logs too. Open end toys that give a lot of play value are great. Most boys love hot wheels and the sets that come with them. Have fun shopping!

Thank you all for the ideas!! I'm thinking the Imaginext might be a good way to go for him.

My 4 year old loves Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs, and Lego. All of those might be a pain, though, for his parents to find all the pieces and bring home.

Most preschoolers I know love Playdough. There are some really cool themed play sets to go with it. When my kids were that age, we had a nice art kit. It was in a plastic box that folded out when you opened it. It came with paint, brushes, shaped sponges, clay, crayons, etc. I remember that my oldest, in particular, loved to sit down and make cards and pictures for everyone he knew.

Play-doh, Candyland, I-Spy Books, regular books, wooden puzzles, marble run, Memory games (they have MANY themes now)
