Gift ideas for a 6 year old

We're going to a birthday party of a girl who will be in my DDs class next year tomorrow. We've met these people exactly once. Any good generic gift ideas that aren't the too obvious toys? (I suspect we are the poor folk at this school) My mom says birthday party gifts for kids should be something that can be used up. I've never been good at that...

I like the tattoo kits. They're only about $10 or so and all kids love tattoos.
DS gave a kit to a girl in his class last year. When we were at the party - all the other girls gave webkins (all the same kind). It made me glad that he gave something a little more unique.

I usually like to add a bag of candy necklaces too - usually you can get a whole bag for about a buck - or a package of cute pencils as a side item.

My girls love crafty things. You can buy a kit, (Wal Mart or Toys R Us will have tons to choose from) or assemble something yourself. Crayons with sparkles in them, drawing paper, construction paper, washable markers, lots of stickers, finger paints, pipe cleaners, etc. Whatever you find in the school supplies or craft aisles. Let your own DD pick something she would like to receive herself.

My DD got a multi colored princess pen, the one you can push/select different colors of ink, she loves that pen. The mom got it & some other cute art stuff at Walmart.

We've found a great idea at target because my DDs love them for themselves...in the home improvement area, by like wall borders they have those stickers that kids can decorate their room. They're made for walls and can easily come off. They have princess ones, butterflies, high school musical, etc, and they're only $10 for a package. Makes a cute gift.
