Some things my boys (23 and 22) have enjoyed in the past are:

car care kits
c/d wallets
magazine subscriptions (Maxim, Ski, Stuff, Rolling Stone,etc.)
sports equipment

my ds is 20 and he likes grooming things like a new razor (likes the new gillette one) and things along that line, a new hoodie, boxers, warm gloves, car or computer items, blank cds

I think a lot depends on what the guy is interested in. My DS is 19 and so far there is nothing listed here that would interest him or his friends. These are great gift ideas, but not all guys are the same. DS & his friends do not wear cologne and have probably never heard of Maxim - but would love a subscription to Transworld BMX or RIDE BMX. They would also enjoy a lot of different videos (especially Road Fools.) I know you said no gift certificates, but DS really appreciates gas cards. I guess you have to figure out what he likes and go from there.
