I had surgery a little over two weeks ago and my 17 year old has been caring for me. She's been so good cooking, taking out the trash, taking care of the pets. We are going on a cruise a week from Friday, but I'd like to get her a little something as a thank you. Maybe a small piece of jewelry? Any suggestions?

Without knowing what she likes, it's really hard to say. You also don't say what kind of budget you're looking at.

How about some OBC for the cruise? Maybe some luggage tags? If she drives/has a car, gas card?

Maybe a gift card or take her shopping for some new cruise clothes? I know my 15yo would be super happy about that.

Has she been mentioning wanting something for the upcoming cruise? New shoes? Outfit?

If you can't think of something special off hand, maybe something during the cruise? Piece of jewelry or a higher end keepsake from one of your destinations?

Depending on your budget, I would either:

(1) Buy her some jewelry onboard or at a reputable jeweler in a port. The jewelry would always have an association with the cruise.

(2) Get a pedicure or mani/pedi together before the cruise.

I like the jewelry idea too.

Your DD sounds lovely - how sweet of her to take care of you.

Does she like Pandora?
You could make her a pretty necklace or bracelet with some Pandora beads. The people working at Pandora, or a jewelry shop that sells Pandora, are normally good at helping customers pick out the perfect items.

Let us know what you decide.

What a great daughter you have! I agree with a piece of jewelry.. it's something she can keep the rest of her life and remember that YOU gave it to her. I'm assuming she'll be a senior next year (?) and it could be something she wears for all those important moments, too. There's lots of mother-daughter sets available from different jewelers (and even amazon), but I'm partial to this piece from the Bradford exchange ($99).

Be sure to browse around, tho... you may find something that fits your daughter more. :) Enjoy the cruise!

I like the idea of a piece of jewelry. I wouldn't buy it on the ship or on an island though -- too much mark-up. I'd buy something at home and give it to her on the cruise. It's a very grown-up gift, which matters to a 17-year old, and she'll always associate it with the cruise.

My husband has several times surprised me with a piece of jewelry on vacation, and I love it.

God Bless your daughter, DarnHeather. She indeed sounds lovely. Healing prayers for you along with prayers for all of you to enjoy a safe and fun cruise. How fun and I'm so glad that you have that to look forward to :) My suggestion is to give her a card with a written message from you. To me, a physical card from a family member or friend is precious because they are an extra gift from God to me. What about asking her what special extra cruise or even back at home trip, even locally, that she would most enjoy. Create an extra memory together. Should you want this to be a true surprise, I would go with card and gift card to a favorite store or restaurant or hers. Thank you for all the love you have obviously raised her with. How blessed she is to have you as her mom.

Your daughter has shown maturity, thoughtfulness and compassion. I would do something to recognize the adult she is growing into along the lines of extending a curfew/giving more freedom...but I'm not a huge fan of jewelry.

What a wonderful daughter you have! I can relate, my daughter is 17 now and has been helping me through seizures and migraines for several years.

If your daughter likes jewelry, you've gotten some great recommendations above.

My first recommendation would be a pedicure before the cruise. Second would be a surprise of a fun shore excursion. (We went to Disney one time and I surprised my husband with a Segway tour. He was very excited.). My third would be a pretty piece of jewelry.

Either a shore excursion or something she falls in love with at one of the ports (could be jewelry, could be a caricature if there's an artist at the port, just anything that makes her eyes light up). Since the cruise is in a week, I think that would be the perfect way to say thanks.
