Our daughter is graduating from 8th grade. Wondering what to get her for graduating? Thanks for any suggestions.

My son will be finishing 8th grade this year, too.

He isn't getting anything. :):lmao:

I asked this last year and my favorite suggestion was a t-shirt or sweatshirt from the high school they will be attending next year :thumbsup2

Depends on what you want to spend I suppose. The plan had been to get dd a laptop as she will need one for high school. I found a fabulous deal after Christmas so she ended up getting it for her birthday in March. We are going for a girls trip (my sisters and I) to Boston for a long weekend and she is coming as her gift. I'll likely do a necklace or something as well.
I am making a pretty big deal of it (for me) but my child is polite, kind, has pulled her grades up to all A's and a few B's and other than a messy room I never have a single issue with this girl. She is a really awesome kid and I want to celebrate her achievements.:)

My DD is also graduating 8th grade and we decided to get her an identity. A nice purse and wallet with a current state I.D. (since the last one was when she was 4 yrs old) and a chase checking card with visa logo (only has savings account.) pre-loaded with $$$$.

It called a student account and will be tied into our account but she will only view her account and not ours. That way she will always have cash available and will teach her how to manage money. and if she ever needs more I can transfer it in a second.

That way is she wants to go to the movies or the mall she could just use her card since I rarely ever carry cash to give her ( I only go to bank maybe once every 6 months) and usually give her my card.

Our's is also graduating 8th grade!! Her gift just happens to be us flying out to WDW 2 hours after the graduation is over :) It wasn't planned that way, but that's how it worked out................so we get a "2-fer".

I wanted to make sure that people here realized that this trip is NOT a gift, as I don't believe in them for passing 8th grade or the whole 8th grade graduation hoopla, kind of reminds me of kindergarten graduation (are they serious). It just so happens that we planned this trip and planned on taking her out of school for the last three days of the year, and then the school throws this graduation thing at us. My oldest DD didn't have an 8th grade grad at this same school, this is totally new!!! As my DD13 says "Thank goodness the graduation works out with the airline tickets we have, otherwise I would be missing the ceremony :) " The kids are more annoyed with having to go through a ceremony, dressed up, sitting still for an hour. I think some very bored Mom's planned this thing.

My parents gave me ten shares of Disney stock. Nineteen years later I still have it...it's been the gift that keeps on giving. :thumbsup2

My DS is graduating from 8th grade this year. I have never thought of getting him a gift. I mean it is middle school, no biggie, even with advanced classes. I never got one, neither did my friends and non of my grown up friends have gotten their child a gift for graduating from 8th grade. I will save that for HS grad and college grad.

If you want to give something, I would give cash. Cash is king around here.

My son is finishing 8th grade this year. His school will have a promotion ceremony however, typically in this area, you don't 'graduate' from 8th grade. You graduate from highschool and college. He's a great student with all A's and B's and plays sports year round. We expect the grades and reward him throughout the year. The reward will be that he gets to leave school early that day as they will hold the ceremony in the morning.

My son is currently in 8th grade. He will get what we get both of our children receive on the last day of school each year. We take them out to eat to celebrate the end of another school year. In my personal opinion, "graduating" 8th grade is a requirement of life in our home and not a huge celebratory milestone of life.

Now that I have stated my opinion, let's get back to your real question. I need more info. What type of price range are you looking? Itunes gift card? New video game? Or are you looking at something more significant?

I bought my DD a new laptop for 8th grade graduation this year. Nothing fancy -- just something that is her own. I also think she'll get a lot of use out of it during her high school years :)

My DD14 is moving up to 9th grade too. We won't do anything special, just be happy it is summer. But, my family isn't big on graduations of any kind. We just go out to eat with family to celebrate, even for college.

I am getting dd a necklace with her birthstone. I am glad to see that I am not the only one that is not going all out. I know some of dds friends are having big parties.

Being promoted from 8th grade to 9th grade is expected in my family and not really worthy of a celebration, IMO.

I see this as a kind of trend where kids celebrate graduating from pre-k, k, 5th grade ect...Just like every kid gets a trophy kind of thing, which I, personally, do not agree with, either. I want their HS and college graduations to be THE BIG DEAL and not, ho hum, for them.

These are things I expect from my children, just as I expect all A & B's on their report cards.

That being said, if you want to acknowledge it, I suppose a t-shirt or sweatshirt from the new high school would be neat.

My son had his grade 8 grad last year. I was appalled at the amount of money parents were spending on SUITS! $200 to rent a suit?? OMG. I bought him a nice white shirt from Tommy Hilfiger outlet for $20 and a pair of nevy dress pants from Gap for $8 I think. He used DH's tie.

Soooo. Since we didn't go all out for that we gave him a ticket to see Rodger Waters with DH. He was ecstatic and floored and will never forget it. I think it was around $80 a ticket.

As another poster said. Grade 8 grad..not a big deal. It's expected. Grade 12 will be different. I'll go all out for a nice suit because it's the last celebration before everyone scatters in different directions and become young adults.

In honor of dd getting through two years of school, a straight A honor student, she got to buy a new dress at TJMAX for graduation. I guess I should buy ds a new shirt next year. ;)

In my family, 8th grade graduation wasn't as big as high school, but we still got gifts from a lot of family members. I received jewelry, some newer pieces and a family heirloom piece that had been my grandmother's and was given to my mom when she was the same age and graduating 8th grade. I still wear all of the jewelry I received, and definitely lean towards that as a good landmark occassion gift.

I also received photo albums, picture frames, and my grandmother made me a small themed scrapbook that had pages for different events that would happen my freshman year of highschool. My parents gave me my first ipod as well.

as for practical gifts, I reccommend a kindle or nook. I have a kindle, and I absolutely love it! I've used it a few times in class, and the only problem I had was the books I'd gotten didn't have page numbers. they are changing that, though, so all the books will eventually have page numbers.

I'm happy that someone posted this question. I also was wondering the same thing. DS is exiting the 8th grade and want to do something special for him , he has had wonderful grades all year and dosen't ask for much , so i'm sure we will reward him with what i don't know.

My DD goes to a Catholic grade school. In my family, it has always been celebrated. In addition, the school makes it a big deal. My DD told me next years graduating class will wear cap and gown. Her class voted it down for this year.
