What is a good birthday gift for a four year old boy. I want to get him something that will not end up on at the bottom of a toy box the next day. He is into spiderman, power rangers and rescue heroes. He has also been asking for a dog so I was thinking about one of the toy dogs that walk. I'm just afraid of it breaking. Movies and tv are also one of his favorite thing to do. Any ideas?

I always suggest open ended toys for toys that play value outlast the theme toys. Legos, Lincoln Logs, or Tincker Toys are good. Art Supplies are also welcome. Get a big plastic container and fill it with paper and makers and paints etc. I wish I had all the money that I spent on those trendy super hero toys as DS went from one to the others. Yep I gave in and bought them but the contructions toys were the ones that out lasted all the others.

I agree with the previous poster. My sons' faves aren't toys but art stuff--glitter glue, beads, paint, play dough, etc.

One friend gave a set of play dough and tools (rolling pin, cookie cutters etc) along with an apron monogrammed with his name. He LOVES it.

A child's cookbook would also be fun.

How about a gift certificate to a zoo, theatre or children's museum??

Other faves include BUBBLES and sidewalk chalk.

If he is in to movies/tv, you can get him a video or dvd (Spiderman - I know it seems old for a 4yo, but I know plenty that have it, or any Disney movie - like Toy Story, Monsters Inc, etc). Art supplies are great for boys or girls! Mom will apprecaite it too, seems like I am always buying that stuff, especially construction paper & crayons. You can probably get Spiderman or Rescue Hero coloring books too. You can get Legos or maybe those Bionicles things (I have a dd so not sure about them, her friends have them though). Anything sports related (many will already have them) like balls, or plastic bats & plastic balls, mini golf stuff, etc.

I think legos are the way to go. When my son turned 4 that was when the Bionicle thing started to really flourish. He memorized how to put them together and would combine them all to make monsters etc. Watch out if you have babies though!

As for the "classics" like lincoln logs and others, My kids just don't care for them. They will outlast all the other toys because they will never get played with! Plus, they are so safe now...creativity is limited.

There are some really neat lego playsets. Go to the lego website and join the lego club. That way your son will get catalogs and comic books too! Such fun to get mail!

We play with mostly boys and they all love instruments. You can get one of the sets or just a set of bongo drums. Classic - the kids are always putting on a parade.
Good luck,
Karen
