Gift Card use question

Gotcha... so you have to go down to the desk after your $800 bill at Citricos posts, not before.

Will they adjust your folio if they have already charged the CC on file?

Trying to figure out in future trips if I can just charge everything on the magic band and then show up the night before I leave stop by the desk?
Yes they will adjust it but I will stop by the desk every couple of nights to pay off the balance esp if I ate at Citrico's or Topolino's since I believe they charge the CC when $1,500 has been charged to your room.

That cutoff amount used to depend on the level of accommodation. $500 for values, $1000 for moderates and $1500 for deluxe. Not sure of that's still the current process or not - I suspect it's changed. Check with your resort's front desk as to their current policy. As mentioned, they can, and will, reverse a CC charge so you can pay with gift cards, but it's a pain for everyone. Charges are typically run around 1am, so as mentioned, it's a good idea to stop by the front desk the night before checkout, a well as whenever you’ve had a large purchase or think you may be getting close to the charge limit.
We used to do this, but quickly realized that it was just easier to use the giftcards directly for all purchases.

Yes you can charge everything for the entire trip onto your magic band and then go the night before and apply your gift cards. Do the night before because they will charge the card around 2-3 AM before you check out. People have had those reversed and had the gift card then apply but honestly I just make it a habit the night before I leave the resort I am at to go down and square up with the front desk.

Keep in mind this is per resort stay. unless you arrange the charges to move with a split stay (I THINK I've seen people succeed at doing that) you need to go down and deal with the desk before moving onto the next resort.

I'm curious what the advantage would be... seems like a big hassle to do so...I'm imaging certain credit card incentives/spending bonuses would be one... the other advantage could be waiting for a charge to post on your credit card until the next statement cycle...

still seems like a lot of a hassle...

It’s not much hassle for me. I stop at the front desk when returning and pay it off. I am saving an extra 10-25% paying with gift cards on top of the AP/DVC discount.

I prefer to charge to the room with magic band as 1 it keeps track of everything spent with the exception of mobile orders and 2 DS can buy things without me having to worry losing a gift card

Yes they can adjust the charges. Throughout your trip they will keep pre-authorizing holds on your card to keep up with/just ahead of your spending, this will appear to you as if you were actually charged but it’s just pre-authorization hits. Still takes down your available credit but you won’t end up with 8 $100 charges actually posting. You can hit the desk the night before and pay everything with your gc. This is the cleanest method.

If you miss that deadline (and I’m embarrassingly well versed in this as my brain is 💯 vacay mode by the end of vacay) your card will be charged the folio balance around 2am on your checkout day. You then visit the front desk before checking out, advise them you want to use a gift card, they will refund your cc (it can take up to a week to get the refund) and take your gift cards for payment. Once in a while I get a CM that is hesitant or tries to tell me not to worry they already charged my cc- I just keep saying I still need to pay with a gc and they will go get someone who knows how to do the refund/charge process.

I see the appeal of paying with he GCs... I less see the appeal of keeping your one portfolio open between resorts on a split stay.
That had never been offered to me. The day of the split I have taken to using gc in person and not charging to my room. Some hotels are able to fully check you out and stop charging and make sure you’re charging to your new folio and some aren’t. After like 50/50 success in getting the split day’s charges on my new resort I just gave up. (The folio for the resort you’re checking out of retains charging privileges for the entire day under normal, non-split circumstances. After that day a second charge will be run on your card to account for any extra charges that hit post-checkout.)
