Gift Card Question

First time cruising RCL. How do gift cards work? If I buy one, can I apply it to my account for spending?

I haven't used one personally, but from reading on cruise critic they seem to be quite a pain to use. It is possible to call RCL ahead of time and buy onboard credit for your stateroom. I just use a cash account for the cruise and pay the balance off with my credit card near the end.
