Gift Card Question?

I am looking to get on board the Disney Gift Card bandwagon. We have a trip planned for 2015, I know quite a long ways off. But I was hoping to start stashing away gift cards now to pay for the trip..I'm assuming the idea behind the Target card is you get 5% off purchases so gift cards become cheaper, i.e. 50.00 gift card for 47.00 or whatever. I am young and have never had a credit card, I applied and was told I would be notified in 2-3 weeks. Not sure if I will get it. I do have a job and am making regular deposits in my bank. Not sure if that helps. Does this only for work Target? Has anyone had any luck doing this at Wal-Mart? Our Target is about an hour away, we shop there but not as often as Sam's or Wal-Mart. .. If anyone has any tips on how to pay off the trips with cards, it would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

You can get a target red card debit that links to your checking account and still get the 5% off. Beware that some targets have stopped letting you use the discount on gift cards now. If you belong to a wholesale club like BJ's, Costco, or Sam's you can also save money on Disney gift Cards.

They do have the Red debit card, gets the same 5% discount.

If anyone goes to a Target and they aren't allowing that discount on Disney cards, then it's either a sudden corporate policy change (which hasn't happened) or the cashier is overthinking it and needs some retraining (or to just scan the things and see what the computer does). Or you're reading about the end to the *pharmacy* rewards and the writer isn't being clear enough. They ended the pharmacy rewards discount on Disney cards, but the Red discount is still in effect.

Judging by the 19 in your name and the fact that it said you're registered 2 years ago I'm going to say you're in you're early 20's.

*IF* you can be a responsible credit card user, it seems like a good time to build up some credit (my sister had trouble getting apartments in her early 20's because she had no credit so no one would rent to her). While the 5% on Disney GC's is ok, you may be better of starting with some kind of rewards card.

I know there is a website that compares different credit cards and their rewards (make note of interest rates, but NEVER carry a balance, lol). Something that gives you a percentage back may make more sense for you than saving %5 at a store you rarely go to.

I am in my 20's, I feel I would be a responsible credit card owner. I currently have no credit, and so much in the world requires us to have it, I figured I might as well start now.
I have applied to a few of the bigger credit card companies in the past with no luck. I figured I would try a few smaller companies to see if anyone bites! No luck so far.

Capital one journey or student are all good ones to start with. That's the first one I started with, and now have the journey to try to improve my credit a little more. Good luck! Credit is important later in life to but houses or rent apartments, etc.

My banking is with Capital One I may have to start there. Thanks!

I believe Capital One may offer a secured credit card you could start with. That means you put money down (say $500-1000 maybe) and actually borrow from your own money. It's a good way to get started building credit.

Apply for a gas station credit card (Shell/BP/Exxon, etc). Establishing credit through them will help in obtaining credit from Visa/MC/Discover/Amex, etc.

They do offer that, but are pretty open to new credit as well, and of you can do a regular card vs secured its better due to added costs with the secured card. It ties your money up until you cancel it which is bad for your credit, so that would be last resort in my opinion.

Since you actually want a credit card, this was our experience. We'll ignore the fact that DH and I individually had CCs from when we were 18, then had them taken from us. I myself went crazy (the new regulations where they have to tell you what you will pay if you only make minimum payments would have been GREAT for me), and DH had a brief marriage to someone who racked up huge bills and then took off. But it was for that reason that when we met, we had really no credit. I had enough for the power company and for cellphone and car lease (which are lines of credit in a way), but he had nothing in his name. We met, got engaged, got married, had a kid, and...his car died just after we turned in my last car lease. Uh oh.

Chase was the only car loan lender that would talk to us (this was before Chase took over Washington Mutual, so there were NO Chase banks out here at the time), and we had the pleasure of being charged 25% interest on DH's "neutral" credit.

After two years of minimum payments to them, I started ramping up the payments. Those two years got him some credit background. I paid it off (he was the worker-bee, but I was in charge of paying bills, still am). Since he now had a background of having credit, it was good.

Then he applied for a CC with our *credit union*. And that turned it all around! Now he has really good credit.

Long story short, I would try a credit union if you have one nearby and are willing to move some of your paycheck to one. And if the CU has a credit card, of course.

It depends on where you live. Here in ohio we have grocery store (giant eagle) that give fuel perks for buying gift cards (disney ones too :cool1:)

Basically you get .20 off gallon of gas per $50 giftcard.

last time we went to disney I got 90 gallons of gas for free or $315 of free gas

Look around at the different offers in your area. Giant eagle was better then targets offer for us.

Oh no! This is the first I've heard that they ended the pharmacy rewards discount on gift cards. I guess I'll switch my prescriptions back to my local pharmacy. It was a hassle trying to get to Target all the time, but I sure will miss the extra 5%.

Any idea what the discount is at BJs? I just got a trial membership for BJs in the mail and wonder if its worth trying for that.
