GG or CP dinner?

Would you do Garden Grill or Crystal Palace dinner if you would only be able to do one? Which has better food? We are two families who have never tried either. The kids are 6,10,12. We are not overly excited for the character interaction. We want to try a character meal out but we are all feeling a little on the fence about it.

I've never been to Garden Grill, but my family did eat at the Crystal Palace for dinner once and were not impressed. The food was just average buffet food, and everything at our table was sticky for some reason. There also seemed to be a lot more young, crying children there than at any other restaurant at WDW. I didn't realize how little I enjoyed that meal until I started thinking about it lol. So I would definitely choose Garden Grill

We loved Garden Grill. Not so much with CP. I find the buffet character meals stressful - probably more than most would since we have a child with food allergies. Also, I prefer when the food comes to me, and I don't have to wait in line. I do enough walking and standing in line in the park.

Is it fine to just wave at them as they come around? Is it weird if you don't get up to see them and get photos?

They all just come by the table to sign autographs or make pics, but they aren't overbearing or anything. They tend to go
take their cue from the group. We like the character interaction and ham it up a bit. Last time at GG Mickey got down on one knee and proposed to our teen DD. Then the waitress came out and told him she was sending the pics to Minnie. It was a lot of fun, but we are the type to encourage them.
You could even mention to your server that you're not really interested in the characters.

Just an FYI, they come by one at a time usually spaced out over 30 minutes or so.

GG, CP is not that great.
