GF Counter Service Help

Hello fellow Disney fans! I'm helping a friend plan a trip for December 17th and 18th and she just mentioned she's gluten free but says they'll probably only only eat counter service meals so my question is... where are the best gf counter service meals at DL and DCA? Specific dishes or just locations that are GF friendly welcome! TIA!!!

They are all pretty gluten free friendly. All should have allergy menus and they will have a chef come out and talk to her if she wants. Jolly Holiday has excellent sandwiches. Any location with burgers will have gluten free buns. DCA has great options - Paradise Garden Grill is largely gluten free. The chinese place has gluten free teriyaki. The Mexican places have a lot of gf options. She will have no trouble at all.

My wife is on a GF diet and it can be challenging to find out what each places offers. At City Hall they use to have a list of what everyone had but the last time we were there they said they no longer have one. Pizza port has some very good GF pizza as does Boardwalk pizza and pasta in DCA. Most places offer something but it's a pain to find them.

It also takes 10 minutes longer to order GF buns or pizza. I'd have someone get in line and someone else find a CM and ask. And ask about dedicated fryers. Not all locations have them, and in the past they have changed.

Thanks so much guys! I've never traveled with someone with any food allergies and she's never been to disney so it's all new to both of us

Take a gander at this thread.

As far as my favorites, the GF teriyaki bowl at Lucky Fortune Cookery is currently #1. Good GF teriyaki is as scarce as hen's teeth, and this bowl tastes just like the gluten teriyaki I remember. The GF burgers and fries at Hungry Bear and Smokejumper's are also pretty good. The thing with GF burgers at DL is that they are cooked fresh to order, then don't sit under warming lights so they're usually a cut above the gluten burgers. And to actually be able to eat fries? Oh man!

I'm not a huge pizza fan to begin with, but the GF pizza I have had at DL is pretty rank. It's frozen gf pizza and IMO a waste of money.

Pretty much all the quick service places have allergy menus now, so there shouldn't be a problem figuring out what is safe at eat restaurant (at a few places, nothing will be safe - corn dog castle (and cart) and stage door cafe come to mind, but most places should have something). My egg/milk/peanut allergic daughter eats just fine at Disneyland. It's the one place that I don't have to bring all her food!

I just want to agree with the above posts. My husband and daughter deal with a gluten intolerance. We actually end up going to Disney more often because of that. Between Disneyland and the cruise line, it's been really easy for them to find stuff to eat. My husband especially appreciates that the chef will often come out to go over the menu, while my daughter prefers to not get the direct attention.

I'm not actually sure how true this is. I have a friend who's got celiac disease and the corn dogs (specifically from Stage Door) are her FAVORITE thing at DL.

According to her, almost every restaurant (including QS) can make almost any of their offerings GF, you just have to be willing to wait for it. They're super serious about food allergies at DL.

Um, the corn dogs aren't gluten free...

I concur! The corn dogs are NOT gluten free (unless it's something new). When did she confirm their gluten status AND that they are using a separate fryer?

There is such a thing as 'silent Celiac' where the person doesn't react severely to ingesting gluten. If your friend has Celiac and is eating those corn dogs then she's damaging her gut, even if she's not experiencing the bad GI symptoms of 'glutening'.

Some people make the mistake of thinking corn batter doesn't contain any gluten. Others will eat what they want while at a park, but be very strict at home. In any case, the only way to be sure is to look at the ingredient list. I'll never forget the time my daughter came home from a friend's house, face swelled up and itching her nose like crazy. I asked her what she ate and she said the mom gave her girl scout cookies. She told the girl's mom that she couldn't eat the cookies because she couldn't eat wheat and the mom told her there was no wheat in the cookies, that they were only made of peanut butter and chocolate. :faint: I explained to the mother about reading the label and she was completely blown away that flour was in the cookies and said it never occurred to her to read labels.

On our recent trip, my wife just got tired of asking for the chef to come out all the time. So there were three nights where we just did popcorn and ice cream as a meal. Not a bad meal, but I'm sure it wasn't the best for the kids.

Turkey legs are GF and are really good. She did that while we ate at Village Haus. Also over at Rancho Del Zacalo, they can make some tacos on corn tortillas on a contaminate-free surface. The green sauce is apparently GF, although very, very spicy per my wife.

so you cant get a gf corndog after all?

We traveled with my nephew who is GF while being tested. There are a LOT of options, you just have to be willing to wait. He thought he was in heaven getting to have pizza and hamburgers while there. It did take 10-15 mins longer.

no she's definitely not the silent type she gets a tiny bit of cross contamination and she's sick for like a day or more.

this was more than a year ago, so it's definitely possible that i'm just misremembering?? she's a corndog fanatic in general, and i know her husband once said something about the stage door corn dogs being the best ones and maybe i just assumed that it was her who ate them?? and that may have been a separate conversation than the one about how great disney is about gf options.

...i'm doubting my memory, and it's probably because it actually failed me :P

SORRY TO GET ANYONE'S HOPES UP ABOUT CORN DOGS

At DLR? Not to my knowledge.

Kind of a shame. There are some pretty good frozen GF corndogs out there. I wouldn't think it'd be too difficult for DLR to stock them at a place where there's a dedicated fryer. It wouldn't be the same as the Corn Dog Castle et al, but we're pretty used to having substitutes that taste pretty good to us.
