Getting to St. John

Hi:
I have read some posts about getting to St. John, but I still have a few basic questions. Just how much time do you save getting to Trunk Bay on a disney excursion vs. going on your own? Also, how long does it take to get to the ferry from the ship and how long is the actual ferry trip?
