We have always rented a car on our trips but I am seriously thinking of cancelling our rental car for this upcoming trip. We use it at night and to go to the parks (no parks this trip except water parks) but I am thinking of saving on the rental and of course, gas!!! We can use ME and then take the Disney buses (we are really in no rush at all this trip)!!

Is there anyway I can get to Publix??? Can you get a taxi?? About how much would it cost!!

Wow, I can't believe after being a member for this long, I have never gone without renting a car!!! My kids are going to die!!! LOL!!!

I think it would cost you more for taxis than to have Wegoshop do the shopping for you. I used them for the first time last week and was thrilled with the care they took purchasing from my list. Amy was at my door within minutes of checkin and unloaded the groceries with me as we checked my list. Totally worth the fee (they charge the receipt from the store plus a delivery fee), Publix frozen pizza was in the oven for the kids before they could even say "I'm hungry" :)

I'd ship the things you can that you might want and get a delivery service for the rest. An alternative, one I've done a couple of times, it to find a member there at the same time who'd give you a lift. The couple of times I've done it, I was the one providing the transportation but I was glad to do it.

You could always do a one day rental to get some groceries and have a meal off site.

Now that is a good idea. Where would you pick up and drop off the rental?

Alamo and National are at the Dolphin and Buena Vista Palace. You can also rent from the Car Care Center where they will send a bus to pick you up at your resort. Depending where you stay, this can waste alot of time. You can also rent from Avis at the DD Hilton, Budget at the DD Doubletree Suites, and Dollar at the Grosvenor (or whatever it's called now). The Dolphin is easy to get to from any park- just grab the bus or boat back to it. We usually time our rentals for our afternoon break from the park- about 1 or 2 pm. They close at 4 pm. To get to the Palace, or any other Downtown Disney resort, just take the DD bus from your resort.

Renting a car is going to cost at least double the $17 grocery delivery fee.

In addition there is driving to Publix, shopping, getting groceries up to your room, and returning the car.

I chose to make my list at home at leisure rather than wander the aisles of Publix with my kids...my vacation time is precious. But to each their own.

We make our list at home at our leisure as well. We just bring it with us and choose our own groceries. I'm very particular about my groceries, especially produce. I really don't want a stranger choosing what me and my family are going to eat. Running to Publix and enjoying some time off property is not a problem for us. We have been members for so long, and been to WDW so many times, a couple hours off Disney property are a relief.

I'm with you, Snowbunny. There will be NO grocery shopping on vacation!

Like I said, to each their own. This past trip was my first time using a shopping service and I could not have been happier with the produce that my shopper chose. Yes she was a 'stranger' but she did a good job and obviously these companies will not do well if customers go on the Dis and say they provide crappy service.
I don't have a problem with time off Disney property - we don't even go into the parks anymore, for the most part - but the OP was looking to save money by not renting a car. The fact is that a shopping service will be far less expensive than even a one-day car rental.

Yep… to each their own. This is the first time without a car. I was really going back and forth about this. What we’ve decided to do is get an Alamo rental at the airport (we don’t land until 6:30 PM) drive to the resort, grocery shop the next morning and return the car to the Dolphin. OK we’re weird….LOVE to grocery shop when we go on vacation. You never know when they’ll have something that’s not carried at home anymore. Last vacation bummed into tea that I can’t find around here and I didn’t have to pay shipping! Can’t say if this idea will work though.

Our last trip we didn't have a car, used ME, and used GardenGrocer. I can't say enough great things about them. We actually called them back when our beer supply was running low. LOL

I'll be arriving at OKW July 28 - I can't wait!!!

Janis

Janis..............how funny!!! We are arriving on July 27 and staying at OKW as well!!!! Neighbors at our real home and at our fun home!!!

DH has decided to keep the rental car!!! We have been doing this for 10 years and have never gone without a rental car!!! Some things you just can't change!!

Thanks for all the input and suggestions.................

My plan is ME for transportation to and from the airport, a one day rental car for $40 from Dollar at the Regal Sun Resort (new name for Grosvenor) for $40 with the code KISSE (open code for everyone from an Orlando travel newsletter). We will head to DTD on the bus, walk to Regal Sun, pick up the car, grocery shop and maybe hit the outlet mall, finally returning the car the next day before hitting the park. Super easy to get form OKW to DTD so no biggie. I like to do my own shopping and we'll be there for two weeks so it is a must do on my list!

You are not alone. My DH and I both love to go to grocery stores when we travel. My DH would be upset if we went to a new town without going to the grocery store.

I did a Mom's only weekend last March with a few girlfriends. We stayed at SoG, so we couldn't use the ME. We used Tiffany Towncar and they included a 30 minute stop at Publix for $100. They were super friendly and very professional.

We're going in the fall, staying at OKW, so we are eligible for the ME. We are considering using Tiffany again for the convenience of it. Never mind the grocery stop, a bonus is not having to navigate our way through the Orlando airport with our luggage when we are going home. They'll drop us off right at the gate of our carrier.
