Getting spam email from yourself?

I can't believe I registered to a Disney site simply to reply to this thread lol Anyways....

While the email appears to be from yourself, it isn't. To determine who the originating sender is from within Outlook right click on the offending message and choose "Message Options". In the popup window you will see a section at the bottom titled "Internet Headers". If you scroll though this section you can located a line with "X-Originating-Email" followed by the email of the mope who's spoofing you. Once you have located this email address you can click on "Actions -> Junk Email -> Junk Email Options" and choose the "Blocked Senders" tab. Click the "Add" button and enter the email address of the originating sender to block further spam messages from him.

Hope that helps a few ppl.

Peace Chizo

P.s. These instructions are assuming you have Outlook 2007, if you should have another email program of preference simply google "your_email_program view headers" to find how to locate the internet headers to block these messages.

OK, a couple of things.

First, your OS isn't the problem. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to hate Vista (many not really Vista's problem but that is a whole different thread) but this isn't one of them.

It is your mail program, your mail provider, your firewall, or your spam filter, not Vista. Are you using a mail client (like Outlook or Thunderbird) or a web client (like gmail or hotmail)? If it is the later it will probably be taken care of soon.

Second, just because your name is showing as the "from" address doesn't mean it is coming from your actual email address. I can have my email appear come form Obama at the White House (or George Washington for that matter) without actually accessing their email. If you look at the detailed headers for the email it will most likely be coming from someone else's server. If they have your address, which they do if they are sending you email, they can put your address in the from field.

Spam, like malware, is an arms race. The good guys close a loophole, the bad guys find a way around the fix. The good guys find a way to block spam based on a set of heuristics, the bad guys find a way to change the heuristics to beat the filter.

I highly recommend using Gmail if you are using a web client. I use them for all my private email (only people I know, not mailing lists of the email I use to register on websites) and since 2004 I have received exactly 1 and only 1 Spam message that beat their filter.

Wow, a 2 yr old thread brought back.

I saw a thread from the OP and thought that I haven't seen her around in a very long time. I always loved her posts (Hi DisneyPhD if you are still around :cheer2:). Wonder if she is still getting spam emails from herself?
