Getting refund on ticket for cancelled flight?

Does anyone have any experience with getting a refund on a cancelled flight. We scheduled a non stop flight for our upcoming trip. It has been changed to a one stop flight.(Delta) I can get a non stop with another airline at another airport for actually much cheaper than my original but would have to get a refund(not a Delta credit) to do this. Does anyone have any experience with this, can it be done? Will call Delta a little later to find out what they say.

We've gotten full refunds from Airtran when flights were changed/cancelled & times were not acceptable to us. Doesn't it make you crazy Hoping for the best for you

The answer from Delta was yes. There were no other non stop flights available on my departure day so they refunded the total amount to my credit card.
