How much are they? I want to get a necklace for my DD (1), SD(10), and me. I am trying to judge how much I should bring for this. I figure this would be a great keep sake.

At the Japan pavillion in Epcot. For $15.00 you get to pick out an oyster from the tank. They will crack it open for you and size it.
But you would then have to go buy a necklace for it.

Depends on the setting. The last one I did was about $35 for the pearl and the setting I had actually taken a previous picked pearl so I did a double setting. The friend I was traveling with did a setting that was $45 in addition to the pearl (she's extremely metal sensitive--it was the 18K or nothing else) But she did another pearl in which the setting was $15. There are tons of different options.

I am planning my family's first trip and I have never heard of doing this. Sounds awesome!! Does anyone know if there is any more info on it online somewhere?

Don't they still do this at DTD as well?
We ordered them for Christmas one year from QVC and it came with the Oyster shell w/pearl inside (white, black or peach) and the sterling silver necklace (like a little cage that opened) it was only like $19.99 and we had a lot of fun doing it.

There have been lots of (some long) threads about the oysters - you could probably do a search. It really is neat. There apparently is also a kiosk in Downtown Disney where you can do it too.

We enjoy doing this every year. The locations we have seen have been at Epcot-Japan, inside the shopping area, Downtown Disney-sort a kinda behind Pooh's Corner and also at the Beach Club Resort, outside by the main pool area. We like the Japan location because of the big deal they make over your chosen oyster. Our toddlers get a kick out of it. They like to clap while the lady taps the small drum. The Mikimoto area is a nice gander as well.

There's also a stand at the YC/BC just past the slide on the sidewalk. If you're planning to do this you might want to take a chain from something you already have to save a few dollars.

I'm not feeling so budget after reading the previous posts... DD8 picked a pearl as her one souvie last month. It's beautiful and she loves it. Actually, she's wearing it right now... She chose the smaller silver dolphin pendant for mounting. The total - for pearl, setting, and chain - less than 4 weeks ago was $63. I was tempted to use a chain we already had at home but the 15" sterling chain was only $11.99 so that wouldn't have reduced it by a huge amount.

DD19 picked a pearl in the Japan pavillion at least five years ago and I remember being shocked at the price after the oyster was opened and we had to do something with this pearl. She ended up with a small signed Wyland 14K gold setting with three dolphins that we were told they don't make any more. It is nearly identcal though to the gold circling dolphins pendant that they have now.

If I remember correctly, DD19's pearl with just the pendant - we used a chain she already owned that time - was around $120. The pearl lady who showed me the replacement for that piece last month said that setting was $93 now and they've added an earrings option to it. Next trip, I want her to take her necklace along to see if the earrings will match then maybe we'll pop for two oysters to celebrate next summer's trip and her 21st bday...

This is definitely one souvenir that you will keep forever. I got one in 1983 and still have it. My DM got one too and still has her's also.

I got two more pearls for $35 including the taxes in May at the YC/BC location. The setting was about another $240 (the only choice for two pearls was 24 kt gold included the chain and was kinda ugly) so I skipped it and brought the pearls home in a little baggie - so if you don't like the settings don't feel you have to buy one. I have a local jeweler who will set them for me for much less with a lot more choice.

I did this with my youngest DS - HE had a blast. He got to pick out the oysters (they had about 50 to choose from), tap the shells and make a wish. There was no line to do this at the YC/BC location so if the wait at Japan is really long this is a good location to go to - about a 5 minute stroll from the International Gateway and about 10-15 minutes from the Japan pavillion.

If you are not metal sensitive you can get an adorable pearl cage on e-bay for about $7 including shipping which looks just like cinderella's carriage (search for carriage cage). Very Very Cute. Unfortunately I'm metal sensitive so I can't buy one. The chain would be extra.

It is very fun and affordable to do the pearly ($17 I believe with the tax added in), every pearl has an oyster, and yes....a great keepsake. The ones I got for my anniversary last year are my favorite pieces of jewelry, especially the one with the two different colored pearls. The other one....they were twins! Both pearls in one oyster. Go for and have fun. If you read the thread you'll see you can order a Cinderella Carriage from a seller on eBay for your pearl that will make it an even more "Disney" memento.

I'm planning on doing this in Oct - I bought the carriage from the ebay seller for 3.50 each - they are cute - nothing fancy of course fot hat price but it did vcome with a chaing - and its for my kids - so I wasn't interested in anyting really fanvy. I think they said the pearls are $14 or so by themselves.
