I know, I know, we've been living in the dark ages, but DH and I decided to get a digital for x-mas, before the baby is born. I just have one question (for now!) that we can't agree on. Should we get one that also takes video, or just pics? We are complete amateurs, and I am not even very good, but I know we want a better camera for the baby and all the future WDW trips. Thanks in advance for your help!

I personally wouldn't get a camera and be worried about if it takes video or not. If I want a video camera, I would be looking for that. They do not make an all in one camera and video camera that does what seperate units would do.

If the camera you ulitmately like the best has a video funtion thats fine, but typically your getting a few seconds to a few minutes of video at most, and your eating up your memory card for the pictures you want to take with the camera...

Just my 2cents

You are absolutly going to need a separate video camera so don't bother worrying about video in your digi-cam.

I haven't looked at every point and shoot camera so I don't know if every one has it, but there are cameras out there like the Sony H2 & H5, Canon S3IS, Panasonic TZ1 and FZ50 etc that have the ability to take video shots. They won't be as good as a dedicated video camera.

I don't even pay attention to this feature when I shop for a camera. I just consider it a bonus. I have a camcorder for videoing.

I just listed the cameras I'm familiar with. I'm sure others will suggest other makes and models

Many of the point and shoot cams have a video option. Great for emailing. But not quite DVD quality.

On top of that they usually just take short bursts of video, nothing as long as a video recorder would do or what you might really want to have.

Some will record as long as there is available memory.

My dgf's Canon A620 does that.

The videos aren't that bad either.

digital still cameras don't take video as good as camcorder. and camcorders don't take very good still photos.

but most cameras these days take "acceptable" video. look for a camera that takes video at 640x480 at 30fps.

i recommend canon cameras.
