Hi
We haven't flown since late Aug. just after the liquid terrorism scare. What liquid, food, and toiletry items can one bring on in one's carry on? Can we bring food and drink from home yet?

Thanks!:goodvibes

The new rule is nicknamed the 3-1-1 rule. It applies ONLY to liquids and gels. There are no new rules concerning items that are not liquid or gel. So food, no problem.

3-1-1
3 as in 3 ounces or less. Each container of liquid/gel must be no larger than 3 ounces.

1 as in 1 quart-sized zip-top bag. You can put as many of the above containers in this bag as you want, as long as the bag is able to close comfortably.

1 as in one such bag per person.

So, if you ask if you can bring a bottle of water from home, now that you know the 3-1-1 rule it's obvious that the answer is NO, since that bottle will be larger than 3 ounces.

After you pass through security at the airport, you can buy anything you want at any of the shops on THAT side of security, and take it onto the plane with you. In other words, if you take a bottle of water from home, they won't let you through security with it. But after you pass through security, you could buy an identical bottle of water and then go on the plane with it.

All of the above has to do ONLY with carry-ons -- there are no new restrictions about what you can or can't pack in checked baggage.

www.tsa.gov has all the info you'll want, but please post back if you have any specific questions -- there are a lot of people here who'd be willing to help!

A couple of point to add.
Food can be considered liquid or gel like. So, No containers of yougurt or packages of mayo, mustard, ketchup etc. PB&J sandwich, who knows? BUT, it,s OK to put the condiment on the sandwich. Editorial - seems like splitting hairs, but :confused3
The 3-1-1 for liquid or gel does not apply to medications . . . you can bring a reasonable amount of OTC as well as any Rx meds. I'm not certain whether all airports still require you to declare them. I would not put my medications in checked baggage, but I certainly have chenged my travel style to now check my toiletries and other liquids.
Editorial - you don't know what the bag checkers have been handling before they get to you, so if they require you to submit to a hand search you may want to ask them to put new gloves on so your possessions don't get cross contaminated.

PB&J sandwich, who knows?
PB&J is fine. Food containing liquids or gels are find - it's only standalone liquids that cause problems. So put your dressing on the salad before running it through the x-ray.

:rotfl: I love it!

THANKS to all of you who have posted with very complete answers! We will leaving at 3:10PM this next trip and don't want to spend an arm and a leg for lunch at the airport. Also, we have a connecting flight and want to have our own snacks since we'll have no real time to eat dinner. This helps me out a lot!

Of course, the TSA is anything but cosistant so anything could be allowed or refused passage thru the check point.;)

What about contact lens solution? Is it considered OTC and waived, or will it go in my baggie?

In looking at the TSA site, saline solution is listed separately from the OTC entry and should go in the baggie.

We always bring food on the plane no problem.
My kids love yogurt which is a no no now, however yogurt in the tube, I cannot think of the name passed security in both LGA & MCO with no problems, we put them in the quart size bag.
Not that you would plan on taking it with you, but DW did not want to throw out a jar of peanut butter we bought in Orlando, I told her it would not be allowed but she took it anyway, needles to say the TSA people had very tasty sandwiches that afternoon.:rotfl:

How about Lysol wipes, or equivalent? Can I carry those on?

I didn't see them specifically addressed on the TSA site.

Thanks!

You should be okay with wipes but it does depend on the TSA person and It never hurts to throw them in the 311 bag.
