getting kids to take nasty medicine?

My ds (also was a puker) hated medicine. It would take me a good 15 min to get a teaspoon in, one drop at a time.

I finally got some frosting & gave him a spoonful with each few drops & it worked.

"Look, kid, I know it sucks, but if you don't take this medicine, you are going to drop dead."

:rotfl:

Things seem to be going well with the Miralax. it says it takes a few days to work. Yesterday she only went a little in the morning but didn't really go the rest of the day but that's an improvement from before when she would struggle to go all day. Hopefully today she has a more regular BM. She's at school today so I warned them that I expect the miralax to kick in anytime now and i don't exactly know what the results are going to be :rotfl2: so I'll talk to them about it when I pick her up and see how she did.

Yeah I get the whole "just make her take the medicine" and i did that for two days and thought "why the heck am I torturing us both when there are many more palatable options for a medication she's going to be on for an undetermined amount of time." The miralax is great... it goes in her drink and down the hatch just like that. Now I just gotta keep my fingers crossed that it works consistently for her.

Glad to hear you switched to the Miralax. We've had great success with it for my DD.

I agree with you on the meds thing. Same DD that takes the Miralax had to take oral steroids a while back and they tasted HORRID. Nothing I did helped...we tried mixing with everything from juice to ice cream to cake frosting and NOTHING could mask that awful taste. She ended up throwing up two doses before I finally called the ped back and begged them for something different. They were able to provide a different version of the steroid (apparently the generic and the name-brand taste vastly different?) and she was able to manage that.

So...it pays to follow up with your doctor as well...there may be an alternative that is more palatable.

Wow...did this thread make it to 3 pages without Mary Poppins coming up?!?! Or did I just miss it?? :rotfl2:

C'mon...Sing along with me..."Just a spoonful of Sugar......" :rotfl:

Sorry couldn't resist. Anyway, on a serious note my nephew has a condition (can't remember the name) where a portion of his Colon was dead (that part was removed). He's on Miralax and has no problem with it just mixed in water.

Just have him hold his nose. :confused3

Then, take a few sips of some soda (bubbles work for whatever reason) before letting go.

I still do this as an adult :)

I agree with OP as well. Sometimes you have to weigh how important the medicine is with how much pain it causes. The phrase, "The cure is worse than the disease" is a cliche for a reason! :thumbsup2
BUT. like the above poster said, when I HAD to give my son medicine, this is what we came up with. He is also a gagger (if that's a word!)/puker, and could taste the medicine when it was mixed with ANYTHING! I was at my wit's end. Then I got him to hold his nose, drink the medicine, and I had a piece of gum (usually cinnamon) ready. While still holding his nose, he would chew the gum enough for the flavor to overcome the flavor of the medicine, and then and ONLY THEN, would he let go of his nose. No medicine taste, only good gum taste!!! We had a traumatic experience at the dentist when he was young - one of his first experiences and the dentist made me hold him on my lap, pin his arms while I laid him backward, had a nurse hold his nose, and while he was screaming and crying, pour medicine down his throat. He was choking and looking back on it now I just know how frightened he must have been - it was like waterboarding a 3 year old! :scared1: He was my first (and only) child, and looking back on it now, I know I should have stood up and walked out after giving that dentist a piece of my mind, but I wasn't as confident back then. Anyhow, short story long, I think this is why my son is so terrified to take medicine. This experience was also instrumental in developing a phobia of the dentist. Luckily we never went back to the other dentist and I found another dentist who is WONDERFUL and has worked diligently with my son to overcome his fear. He now goes and gets his teeth cleaned without any struggle, which I honestly didn't know if we would ever get there! :wizard:

I may be a bad mom but I had to give my DD strept antibiotics for 10 days and she refused to take it, kicking and screaming and spitting it out...the only way I was finally able to get her to take it calmly was to promise her a "special treat" after every dose. She's 2 yo and was easily tempted by the 1 single M&M I gave her after every dose that she started to look forward to taking it and she'd ask me for "more pink drink please?" LOL! :rotfl2:
