Getting in SB vs. FP

How do you know which one to get into? If SB has a posted wait of 20 minutes, do you get in that line? Is it obvious from just looking at FP lines how long they are ? Do FP lines have posted wait times?

We just got back on Sunday. It really doesn't post the wait time for Fast pass, but we found it to be pretty quick. The only one we waited for at all really was Big Thunder Mountain. That took us about 15 minutes to get through the FP line, and I think standby was at about 45 minutes.

At DHS, we had a FP for Star Tours from 12-1pm. We walked up at about 12:10, and the standby line said 10 minutes. We decided to just go to the standby line, then if the kids liked it... we would go back through with our fastpasses. Only 1 of our kids wanted to ride again, so DH and DD1 used their fastpasses, and I waited with DD2 in the gift shop.

If SB has a posted wait of 20 minutes, do you get in that line?

If the standby wait is more than 20 minutes, we will usually skip the attraction.

Do FP lines have posted wait times?

Nope.

I think you just have to make a judgment call based on expectations. For example, if I had a FP+ for Big Thunder Mountain and I walked over and saw that the SB line had a 20 minute wait, I wouldn't really care what the FP+ line was (unless I was in a rush). I would just use the SB line and change my FP+ to some other attraction at some other time. So for me, it isn't really a question of: SB=20 and FP=15, therefore take FP. I look at it in terms of what the SB line is in comparison to what other SB lines might be at other attractions now, or later in the day. In other words, the SB line that you see is not in competition with the FP line for the same attraction. It is in competition with other SB lines in the park. Of course, all of this assumes that changing your FP to another attraction at another time is both possible and convenient.
