It's really close. The bus would just take a few minutes of travel time. We were late for Jiko once and took a cab and the driver was really miffed because it was so close. He sang a different tune with a $5 tip.
Don't waste your time. We stayed at AKL in 2003 and Mara was usually crowded and didn't offer anything that you couldn't get at one of the CS at AK. Why not try Flame Tree BBQ?
We did that in Dec....we got on the bus and luckily one had pulled up as we were walking to the bus stop...a few minutes later we were there. We liked exploring the gift shop and resort at AK.
I say go for it, the food was eh but it was still a nice visit away from the park

I disagree, Mara isn't that busy at all, and the offerings are very good. You will also be able to check out some of the activities at the hotel if you time your visit right and you will certainly be able to go out and see the animals on the Savannahs.
I do agree that Boma is worth the time though... but I think the OP is looking for a CS.
I respectfully disagree. We have greatly enjoyed Mara when we have stayed at AKL. The Chicken Pepper Pot Soup is SOOOOOOOOOOO good, and the African Stew is good, and so on.
I have rarely seen it crowded except at peak times, there is an outside seating area, and the lodge is beautiful. I think it would be a nice escape from the park.
