My brother and his wife are going to default on about 3 or 4 credit cards. They have already settled on one of them with Citibank. But they have a few more with Chase that they are waiting for them to be "charged off". (Not really sure what that means) But they are all in my sister-in-laws name. He is an only an authorized user on one of them and now that particular account is starting to show up on his credit. Can he have that taken off of his credit report since it was not actually his account, just an authorized user? And how would he do this? They want to keep his credit at least decent.

He needs to be removed as an authorized user, but honestly, if any of the other cards are in his name and the charge off-his credit is pretty screwed anyway.

I would suggest they first do some reading and then some posting at creditboards before doing ANYTHING else. (creditboards.com)

He should dispute it and be removed as an authorized user. Good luck with it, even when it's legitimate it can take years until they get around to taking things off your credit report. (they aren't supposed to take their time, but it seems that the information is always "still being processed"...)
