Getting a room.

I've read some postings about DVC resorts only having rooms available if you're willing to pay. After reading this, I have to ask how hard is it to get a room? I assume you can get some room at your home resort, but if you wait until the seventh month window, are cash only rooms more common? Or under what circumstances are cash only rooms will be what's availble.

If you are not talking about holiday nor peak times, and are flexible with your choice of resort and room type, you should be fine booking at the 7 month window on points.

I finally gave up and bought BWV points when for several years in a row I was unable to book there at the 7 month window for the first week in December. That is just an example of a peak time.

I have made relatively short term notice ressies at various with no problems too.

At the seven month window there is usually some availablity - but it can go fast and isn't always complete (i.e. you might have no problem getting a two bedroom, but the Grand Villas will be all booked up. Or you can get your room for all nights - except you need to waitlist for Wednesdays) - which is variable depending on resort (smaller resorts tend to book faster), room type (standard view studios are often long gone at Boardwalk Villas before TEN months), and time of year (early December is surprisingly busy to most new DVC owners).

The cash availability thing is best illustrated by an example. Lets say Don Disney and family decide to use their points to cruise. They turn their points over to DVC, DVC then "sells" those points to CRO to reimburse DCL for the cruise. So often there is cash availability but none on points - the critical thing to remember is that Don Disney is using that room - he's just using it on the cruise ship and Disney is selling that room to the public to pay for the cruise.

Crisi - that's one of the best, most concise examples I've seen to illustrate this! It seems like new members are constantly confused by this situation, but that really does a great job explaining it.

I just booked a preferred studio at 6 months out for Boardwalk Villas, for March 10-14 (magic season), I could not get the standard studio which would have allowed me 5 nights instead of 4 with my small contract. This is my home resort but my resale did not close in time to book at 11 months out.

I think it is changeable, and that sometimes it depends on how flexible you are and what type of room you want. I really did not expect there to be any studios available, but I guess I was lucky.
