A trip to Brazil on December 4th, a passport and a visa are needed ... Is this possible in this short time frame and if so how to go about it. Thanks!!!

I would be more concerned about the visa than the passport. I saw something about them.changing the visa stuff for Brazil but I don't recall when. They are a pain to get and again unless it's changed each embassy does it differently. So the one in Chicago is different from LA which is different from Atlanta. You'll need to Google it.

I think you have a very slim chance. The State Department website shows it takes 2 - 3 weeks for an expedited passport by mail. If you have a passport center near you it might be less time but you would need to get an appointment right away. You can go to the state department website and looking for expedited passports. It looks like you have to have travel documents like plane tickets in hand. A visa for Brazil takes 7 - 14 days or more in busy times but it looks like you have to already have a valid passport to apply. I don't know if there are any tricks to get these any faster but perhaps others will comment. Good luck!

When do you need your passport?
When? Why? Service How?
Right now I have a life or death emergency Expedited See our "Life and Death Emergencies" page
Less than
2-3 weeks I'm traveling within 2 weeks or need a foreign visa within 4 weeks Expedited Make an appointment at a passport agency or center
Less than 4-6 weeks (No reason needed) Expedited Expedite at an acceptance facility or expedite a renewal by mail
More than 4-6 weeks (No reason needed) Routine Apply at an acceptance facility or renew by mail

I applied in July and got mine in the mail a week later and didn't expedite... But I think I was just lucky. Other friends have reported getting them within two weeks not paying any extra either.

I think your best bet is to consult with a facilitating service. They'll know every angle on the passport front and then will help push things through to get your visa -- for a fee. In other words, expedite the passport and expedite your visa to the extent that you can. I've used Travisa both personally and professionally. There are other agencies which provide similar services. The upside of such services is that you can talk to a human being who deals with these issues every day. If you can't reach a human being, move on to another agency. Tiny things can throw off a visa application. That doesn't matter so much when you've got plenty of time but can results in weeks of delays; not great when you're trying to travel soon. I recently applied for a visa for China and Travisa noticed that the photos I supplied didn't show my ears (my hair covered them). My application would have been kicked out if they hadn't caught that detail. Good luck.

The Brazilian visa is going to be the problem. I had a service handle mine and it still took three weeks.

Applied for Passports earlier this year. Just regular service. Got both mine and my son's exactly two weeks after applying at the Post Office. No idea on a Visa, though.

My husband had an unexpected business trip to London this summer. He booked his trip, made an appointment at the passport center in Stamford CT for a Friday, we went tot he appointment on Friday, he got the passport in the mail on Tuesday and he traveled the following Friday. They told him that if he was traveling within 48 hours of his appointment, he would have walked out of the passport center with his passport in hand. Of course each level of expediting costs more. I think it cost him about $220 to get his passport.

The bigger issue you might have is needing a Visa, depending on the country you are visiting. That might have to involve a trip to a Brazilian Embassy or Consulate in person once you have your passport in hand.

My grand daughter got a passport in one day in Chicago with air travel within two weeks. She went down to passport center, completed forms and went back next day. Can’t speak to visas

Expedited a passport renewal last month. Dropped it off at the post office on a Saturday and it was delivered to my home the following Saturday. No experience with a visa
