Getting a little nervous....

I'm not usually a nervous type of person, but all these news articles I'm reading about another attack on the US are beginning to bother me. I've read about cruise line security, which makes me feel a little better, but I can't help feeling concerned for our safety. We are driving to port, so I'm not really worried air travel safety, but it seems that a cruise ship would be an easy target. Am I being unreasonable? I know we can't live our lives in fear, but I can't help being concerned. Anyone else feel the same?

Pam:confused:

I took the Disney Magic cruise on Nov. 7 2001, just 8 weeks after 9/11. The security was fine everywhere we went. The Coast Guard escorted us out of Port Canaveral, and in every other port we stopped at, a security boat sailed around the ship constantly. I guess you could consider anything that big a target, but I wouldn't be too worried. I think Disney is as security conscious as we are. Anita. PS I just booked the Magic for the 9/21 sailing - can't wait!

Personally, I don't think cruise ships will be high on a terrorist's list of targets, especilly for the US. There are so many other more important and easier to penetrate targets. If they want high casualties, any sports staduim/arena will have a higher concentration of people than a cruise ship with more lax security.

The chance of a terrorist striking your cruise ship is so slim that if it concerns you then you must be terrified of getting into a car!? The chance of you dying from a car accident is SO much higher!! ;) ;) ;)

You should just relax and enjoy your trip.

Just remember to worry about the things that you can control and to live your life to the fullest!

I agree sdoane!

We had book the 3 day cruise last year for the week right after 9/11. At first I did not want to go. Also we had planned to be there a few days before to spend time at WDW. Well after canceling our cruise I had the good fortune to attend a celebration of the Habitate For Humanities Project in Indianapolis, and President Jimmy Carter came to speak (just days after the WTC attack). It was so uplifting, and when we got home that night, DH and I decided to call DCL and see if it was possible for us to still go on our cruise.

We had to drive to Florida at that time (remember how planes were grounded and then when they began again things were crazy). But I am SOOOOOO glad we did. We were able to get our family to WDW for one day at Animal Kingdom (not exactly the same as having 4 days like we had planned, but still a nice surprise for my DD who is a BIG Tarzan fan).

When we got on the cruise, we almost cried watching the joy on our children's faces. DH and I enjoyed that cruise more than the one we had taken the year before. We felt SO blessed AND after that we decided that life is too short, and we want to enjoy the many blessings we have around us (and yes, I think WDW is a blessing--a virtual paradise in our harsh world of reality).

A few months later we took our children back to WDW so they could go to all the parks AND we joined the DVC!!! Our deed was filed last month on our 20th Wedding Anniversary!!! That was SO neat!

So anyway, my point is this....last year, the week after all this happened we were all scared, all grief stricten. But I am so glad we moved forward with our trip. My children only get to have one childhood before they must deal with all the stress and problems of the real world. I grew up during war time too in the 60's, and it can scare children hearing all the bad stuff. I want my children to have Pixie Dust and Magic times!

(P.S. Right after that cruise we booked our next one which will be in 3 months and we are gonig on the 7 DAY cruise!!!! This will be my daughters' (twins) third birthday on the cruise!)

I also have to admit I am a little nervous. Not about the ship being the target, but about an attack somewhere that will prevent us from going on this long anticipated cruise (I do not mean to sound callous about damages, etc). We sail on 7/6 just two days after the 4th of July. But, I am determined to enjoy!!!!

I admire your outlook and from this moment forward, I will not give any of this nonsense another thought.
To Life!!!

I can sympathize with you teacher3410 :D

I still refuse to fly even now. I know that it is safer than a car and everything but I still just can't bring myself to do it. My father in law was even going to buy us plane tickets to use for our honeymoon and I refused.

I was slightly concerned about being on the ship too but really didn't think much about it once I got on. The only time I really kinda got upset was during the emergency drill. There I was on the deck with my life preserver and then the abandon ship alarm sounded  I just kept thinking that this might really happen and I really need to pay attention to what the drill instuctors were saying but I couldn't even hear them over people talking. They even kept telling people to be quiet but the people just kept talking anyway

Anyway as you can see I made it back okay and nothing happened. And yes I realize that I could have taken a plane to Florida and back and nothing would have happened. I will eventually get on a plane - but I am just not ready yet. I have a goal of visiting Disneyland and once I am ready to fly we will go :)

Sad to say it, :( but I am afraid children are a big target. I think terrorists (or anyone that wants that kind of attention) knows how much it would destroy Americans (everyone) if they targeted something like the DCL. In these scary times we are becoming more patriotic, more protective of our country, but, Our children are the core of our being. That is where they try to get us.

We will be on the wonder on July 4th. I have been thinking about that not bing the greatest date to travel but I will not be scared into living my life in my house. We will have the time of our lives & trust in our brave heros who fight for that very freedom!

We went 5/26 and the week prior there were new reports about terrorists increased communications and a high probablity of a US attack that week and possibly involving scuba divers. I kept pushing thoughts out of my mind about someone planting something under the ship. I felt pretty safe about how the vacationers were screened before boarding, so I didn't fear that so much as a suicide bomber diving into us, but once there, it's such a happy, magical place, I never felt afraid.
