I am hoping someone on here can help, that has been through this process or knows someone who has. I have written a children's book for my son. I believe it is pretty good, and I have not seen one that addresses the particular subject matter of this book. I would like to have someone to look at it, and possibly have it published, but I don't even know where to start. I have been looking on the web for info, but most everything I have found sounds like a scam, most of them wanting to sell you a book or something to tell you what to do. I really can't afford to be caught up in a scam over this, I just would like a shot at seeing if this book has what it takes to make it.

I work in publishing. I have for 12 years and 9 of those have been in children's books. I have worked at the 2 largest publishers in the world.

It is very hard to get your book out there. You could look up agents info and send them quiry letters. It is also worth joining your local chapter of SCBWI. It's the society of children's book writers and illustrators. They hold conferences where aquiring editors from publishers come to look at your book and offer critiques, suggestions and on occassion buy. I think agents also attend.

I also want to let you know that it is hard to sell your book in this economic environment. Publishers are buying less and less. Right now the hardest category to break into is picture books. YA and middle grade novels are the hot sellers and publishers are mainly buying those. New picture book authors are harder to break out and publishers are not always willing to take a risk. The same applies for picture books that may be a niche story with limited appeal to the general public.

I am not trying to be harsh or to squelch your dream but just trying to be honest.

Try book stores. Sometimes they will put out flyers about publishing and writing. They sometimes can be found in the back of bookstores for free. There is also several magazines for writers at about 3.99 each. I used to write all the time, but I got too busy with life and work. The internet can be useful. Just type in free book publishing anything you have to pay for run from it.

Unfortunately for you the Samizdat media are the only ones willing to take a risk. Mainstream publishers go for established authors.
