Get rid of all carry ons

How about eliminating all carry on luggage. All. This will speed things up, make it easier to check passengers, make the flight more secure, make the job of the crew easier. This all makes sense. But many US travelers would rather be comfortable than safe, so it will never happen. I would give up carry on in a second if it meant a safer flight for my family. Airline travel will never be the same, or at least it shouldn't, because the crazies are out there, waiting for us to settle our padded butts back into our old routine.

Until the rules are changed regarding liability for checked articles, people will not give up laptops, cameras and other electronic items. Also, people need to carry on items such as medicine.

In fact, Michael Eisner uses his time on airplanes to catch up on his email on his laptop.

My own thoughts...

I wouldn't have any problem at all with them eliminating use of the overhead storage bins. That would mean anything you carry on had to fit under the seat. I also wouldn't shed a tear if they required any luggage with wheels to be bag checked.

I completely agree with you. Carry on luggage has gotten completely out of hand. This has been a pet peeve of mine since the time a skateboard fell out of the overhead and hit me in the shoulder. It would also expedite boarding and unloading the plane. We all know how long it takes some folks to get their luggage stowed in the overheads. I really like your idea about it having to fit under the seat. That way people could still bring their medications, jewelry, book, etc.

I stopped using the overhead bins because I could never get my one small bag in. That bag easily fits under the seat. I can carry everything I need for those few hours and still have room to stretch my feet under the seat.

I would normal agree but my son takes growth hormone shots and has to have a backpack which is big to carry all his supplies and meds and i couldn't or wouldn't trust putting those in my luggage , But all other luggage i would say yes to.

What would parents do about diaper bags and toys for kids? Would the other passengers really enjoy a smelly baby or screaming out of boredom? Also since a lot of airlines are discontinuing food service passengers may choose to bring their own food. I'm ok with the one carry-on rule since I'm one of those parents with a kid still in diapers.

read the other day that liquids will be limited through security checkpoints. You'll need to by drinks at those very reasonably priced stands in the secure areas (tongue in check for the 8$ bottles of water).

Liquids can be something of a security risk.

If they ever got rid of all carry-ons, I guess we will have flown on our last plane. My husband can't go anywhere without his laptop and there is NO WAY he would put a VERY expensive, VERY delicate laptop in his checked baggage. Since the airlines make most of their money off people who travel for business, I don't think this will ever happen.

I would suspect if they did away with carry-ons my daughters would never fly either. No way they are putting their precious violas in baggage. Too fragile and they are their careers. Without the viola, no work. Professional musicians.

I think they just need to be harder on people with the huge, wheeled bags that they claim are "carry-ons". The idea that if they fit under the seat it's OK is good with me. I also have kids and although we are out of diapers now, every previous trip has needed at least a diaper bag.

I think the solution is to let people without carryon luggage first on and first off the plane. Your reward for checking all your luggage. That way the other folks can all wait on each other to collect all their carryons.
This would be especially wonderful on SW Airlines since they do not do seat assignments.
I have suggested this to several airlines but they don't seem thrilled with the idea.

For all you folks that responded with the comments from Laptops to meds. This is about carry on stuff that will not fit under a seat. Last I knew Laptops fit, most backpacks do( I have a large one that holds the laptop, the digital camera, it's tripod, batteries, charger, software and assorted accessories), diaper bags do, etc. There is a lot of room under the seats, it is deceptive until you put something under there.
I LOVE the idea of all carry on pax having to wait. What a GREAT idea. Nothing like some pax trying to make his way to the back to pick up his/her bag while everyone else is trying to deplane.
Oddly enough, I don't find this to be as big an issue on SWA as I have experienced on other airlines.

I guess I misunderstood the OP. I thought he said get rid of "all carry ons," not ones that didn't fit under the seat.

That's what I was responding to as well. The first post says we should get rid of ALL carry on luggage. I have no problem with limiting it to what will fit under the seat, but that isn't what the original poster suggested.

I wouldn't mind checking all bags..........

If they offered mags, crayons and writing paper for the kiddies..........

Also, why don't they bring back movies on flights? Great way to distract kids!

You are totally correct, and I guess I misread it. I can see where all the post are coming from now. I don't agree with eliminating all carry ons, just the ones that will not fit under the seat.

Actually, you are quite wrong. The problem really resides in the FACT that the carrires can not guarantee the safe and timely arrival of luggage, and they do not cover damage to certain checked articles. Until this changes, there will be reason to have carry on. WHile I'll be the first to agree that it has gotten out of control, there is no viable security and/or safety reason to not allow one carryon per pax.

Remember, Pan AM 103? The bomb was hidden in CHECKED luggage.
