Geography help needed re: London, England, UK, etc.

And to make it even more confusing Scotland has a different judicial system and education system than England and Wales (not sure about Northern Ireland).

Wow I didn't realize how confused I WAS about all this.

I still don't think we've answered the question...
England is a... country
U.K. is a... ?

Now I finally know what Great Britain is! (I think)
So... it's not a country or any other governmental unit, just a geographical unit... an island. Right?

So... England is NOT the capital of GB,
kinda like Washington DC is NOT the capital of North America, right?

Yes, I know it's more like England NOT being the capital of Europe, but I can't think of another island that is similar.

So if I call someone "British," that is right only if they're English, Scottish, or Welsh? Irish people are not British?

I THINK I've got it.

Irish people are not British?

No they're from Ireland

But if your from Northern Ireland your British ( easy peasy )

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland came about after The Act of Union 1801.

Northern Ireland became a country in its own right after The Government of Ireland Act, 1920.

I bet you all didn't know this lol

The flag created by the merger of the Kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801 still remains the flag of the current United Kingdom. Known as the Union Flag or the Union Jack, it combines the flags of England and Scotland with St. Patrick's flag from Ireland. The upright red cross, St. George's Cross, represents England. The Blue background, on which St. Andrew's Saltire (in the shape of a white 'x') appears, represents Scotland, while the diagonal red 'x' which overlays the white x' on the blue background of Scotland, is known as 'St. Patrick's Cross' and represents Ireland.

jj...........

Clear as mud right LOL. One more thing to throw into the pot that I haven't seen mentioned; althiugh it's correct to say that London is the capital of the UK, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland, each have their own capital cities. Just as every state in the US has it's own capital, (I think).
