We're debating on whether to bring the GPS or not. Anyone placed or found any? We're just not into hidden mickeys but we love to geocache and have on many other trips, just not WDW. Any info would be helpful!

Thanks!

Geocaching-I'm afraid this is showing my age,but huh?????

I posted a quirie months ago and got little results. Look up geocaching.com and type in the zip codes for the various resrts on property, were alot of cachs, most were virtual. Guess Disney does not like hidden boxes or the like but people do do them. I forgot my GPS last trip, bummed out but we never seem to have the spare time to go geocaching. Keep me informed if you do, really interested for our next trip. Being new to this sport and info would be appreciated. Good luck and have fun.

I looked on the site a while back and there were a lot of items around Disney. I am not sure how many were virtual though but I thought there were a few boxes hidden around some of the resort areas.

Oh my tom and I were just having this discussion! Let me check with him, I think we are going to bring it.... just for him

I know there are supposed to be some letterboxes hidden in WDW. I printed everything out a few months ago, and of course, I forgot everything at home. <groan>

Now would be a good time to do letterboxing/geocaching because the crowds are so low.

Hope you have fun locating them. :)

We did alot of research on this for our upcoming trip. Onsite there are virtuals and waymarkers, but there are alot in the area including several in Celebration (which, BTW are regular caches and some are Disney themed!) You can no longer find the waymarkers on the Geocaching site, you have to go to their new site waymarking.com. There got to be too many so they created a site for just those finds. Have fun!

we found 51 total caches within 10 miles of 32830. If you need more help or info feel free to PM

I believe this is a way that folks can use coordinates to pinpoint something that another "geocacher" has hidden. There is a website where they post the coordinates of what they have hidden, then others can go and look for it. I think when it's found, the "finder" goes and removes the location from the site, or maybe even hides something else in its place. :confused3

This is just my very limited understanding.

Can anyone give more accurate info.?

That sounds pretty accurate... some geocaches can have a 'logbook' to sign, in some caches the idea is to take whatever is inside the box and leave some goodies for the next person, a pen, a coin, a rock, just a little trinket or something. The fun of it all is the treasure hunting aspect, because the GPS coordinates aren't so accurate that you can pinpoint it immediately, you'll usually wander around in a 10-20 foot radius looking for the cache.

I would think Tom Saywer Island would be about an ideal place for a cache inside of the theme parks, anyplace that's guest-accessible would probably be cleaned and cleared of a cache. Outside of the parks, the grounds of various resorts (Wilderness Lodge - Fort Wilderness walkway for example) would be good spots.

I can't imagine actually geocaching at the parks though, there's so much else to do, and so little time it seems!

Good way to spend my lunch hour at work today :rotfl: We've decided to bring it because there appear to be a lot, especially in Celebration as someone posted above. We leave in the morning so I'll try and keep you posted while we're there!
