So, I was thinking of getting into geocaching with my DH and DD and was wondering if anyone here does this?

What is a good GPS unit to get in the $100-$150 range? Anything else I need to get us started? I signed up at geocaching.com any other good websites out there?

Do you and your family enjoy geocaching? I thought this would be a great way to see the state and get in some exercise.

I've been geocaching for almost a year. It's lots of fun and get you to interesting local places that you would never think of visiting.

Check out www.geocaching.com for guidance on recommended GPS receivers in different price ranges. I have a Garmin Colorado 300 that Costco was selling for around $275.

There is a DIS thread that discusses geocaching.

Yes, we do and we love it! We started off with a Garmin eTrex (yellow) but have now moved on to a Garmin Oregon and it's brilliant.

Unfortunately due to school, exams and caring for elderly parents, we don't get out and about as often as we'd like but this hobby has enabled us to discover some beautiful areas of countryside which we might not have experienced otherwise.

I've been geocaching since 2001. I think that it's great fun. My wife is pretty sure that it's the lamest activity ever invented.

If I were starting out today, I would pick up a used Garmin Venture Cx or Legend CX from ebay for $50-100. These units are very rugged and have a good feature set.

After you find a few geocaches and decide that it's a hobby for you, consider getting a premium membership. It will allow you to run 'pocket queries' which means you run customized queries and download info for up to 500 caches at a shot. You can then dump this information into a pda or ipod touch/iphone. This makes it a breaz to go geocaching anytime the fancy strikes you.

My family loves it! We do both geocaching and letterboxing.
I tell my kids that they have been chosen to train as secret agents, and that we get sent "training missions" for them. They love sneaking around and finding the hidden treasures left by other "agents in training"
I know. They'll need therapy.

DH and I love it - we take our dogs. Nice way to see some things off the beaten path. I'm not sure our GPS unit - it's just an older Garmin and it works fine.
