Genie+ Actually Sells Out for the First Time!

We are heading there in a few days and booked this trip pretty last minute by Disney standards (back in Nov.).. Hotel pickings were slim then. I check daily because I want to switch hotels and there are 2 rooms types showing- something at AKL and something at Coronado Springs. Sometimes I get a different hotel in there but at best there have been no more than 3 rooms for my dates as an option. It definitely makes me worried about crowds. If I could have bought Genie+ at $29/ticket/day back when I bought our tickets I would have done it because now I have the added stress that it could sell out. Meaning buying it at midnight then back on at 7am to book stuff. That's tedious. I probably can just buy it at 6:50am but I'll feel better going to sleep knowing I have it.
It sounds like it sold out later in the day, so that must've been people buying it throughout the morning (maybe after they saw crazy lines). I really doubt that buying it at 6:50am is going to be a big issue. You'll also be there post President's Day weekend, which should ease the crowds at least a little bit.

Are the final Covid extension AP dates getting close for many guests?
I know my AP date expires in April .
Perhaps guests are going for that final squeeze and choosing not to renew?
My Universal AP also is expiring with Covid extensions at end of March.

If you have AP’s what are your Covid extension expiration dates?
Please post so we know if their will be another crazy sold out genie day
No, it isn’t some sudden AP surge. It’s cold in a lot of the US, a holiday where if you don’t ski you have nothing to do but amuse the kids, and post-Covid travel is still hot, hot, hot. Recipe for a ton of people at a Disney park.

Agreed. If anything, it seems like the rate of people renewing is extremely high these days, as folks don't want to lose access to their APs. This time of the year can often be crazy, with the convergence of President's Day, Valentine's Day, Mardi Gras (some years), and Daytona all around the same time. And yea, people sick of cold weather, too!

When I went around this time last year, I talked to a few people at the resort pool and all of them said that their kids had the week off from school so they went down to Disney. I remember them being from New York, New Jersey, Minnesota, Massachusetts and there was even a family from Toronto. It's similar to "Jersey week" in November where practically the entire state packs up and goes to Orlando.

The problem was with it overlapping with Mardi Gras, which is rare, and it exploded out of control

Mardi Gras doesn't help, but Presidents Day week 2022 was the "busiest" week of the year at MK according to Thrill Data's wait tracker, beating out Christmas, Easter, and other holidays. It has been the busiest week ever at the MK since the parks have reopened.

This year may beat it.

Link in the OP didn't work for me, but I thought I read it cost $29 today? Disney is experiencing high crowd levels. I will be there next weekend, only planning to buy it for 1 day.
Be up at 7:00 am and be prepared to plan at the mercy of the system for that day. We have had meal reservations to change at the last minute due to Genie+ and LL. We do not care for this system at all and miss our fast passes. Fast passes gave a scaffold of your day before leaving home AND you did not have to get up so early. However, the revenue stream being generated will never see fast passes return.

They could have kept it exactly the same and just charged for the service in advance. Or you know start at a more normal hour like 8am, or even allow you to book your first one the night before.

For sure. It was so much better in our opinion. Can't get DH to return because of the changes.

As stated many places, there were pros and cons to the FastPass+ system, as well. People complained about booking so far in advance and having less options day-of if you didn't book so far in advance. With the obvious exception of the cost, Genie+ hasn't been terrible to work through. We have not been at the 'mercy' of the system all day. The more we've used it, the easier it is to use. Do we check on things now and then and try to plan out the day to our advantage? Absolutely. But with a couple decent tweaks lately, notably the 'modify', and the app showing when we can make our next LL, it works pretty well for us. At least with G+ we don't have the restriction of no overlapping reservations - that's worked well for us in the evenings when we might get something at 6-7 and another 610-710. That was always a challenge with FP+, at least for us. And it's definitely better than the original FP system where you had to go to the attraction for a paper ticket.

Always thought that once a week they should have a no LL/FP day - just standby lines like long ago, and like immediately following re-opening due to Covid! But I doubt we'll see that anytime soon!

Wow - very interesting trend. Still a very busy holiday weekend, but still something I wasn't sure we'd see.
Could be the busy weekend. but, they had also talked about decreasing the number of Genie + sold to lessen those lines. Could that have happened?

We'll never know! But I really expect they have a max number and they hit it the past 2 days.

And if you do ski like our family the price of that has sky rocketed so bad. Even my husband said with
these costs might as well go back to Disney. lol

I was tracking wait times around noon today (2/20) and the lines weren't terrible for the average rides (still crazy long for the super popular rides). Still Genie+ return times. When did it sell out?

I know a lot of schools are out this week in the Northeast, so I assumed it would be jam packed this week.

It’s wild that it didn’t sell out over Christmas an NYE! Do we think they have now set a limit?? I did complain once and ask for a refund once while there over NYE because we could hardly get any rides and it was such a waste. I can imagine that happens to a lot of people.

Interesting the schools in Celebration were Open today to make up for hurricane week .

Purely a guess on my part but could it be they’re trying to find the balance between ‘offer to all’ vs ‘sell out so a feeling of “I NEED to buy it before it sells out”?’
