Genetic hyper-clotting and miscarriage

A few years ago my husband had a DVT which traveled to his lungs. As a result we discovered that he has genetic markers for hyperclotting ... our daughter was tested also and has the same genetic markers.

We have a wonderful 18-month old DGS because my daughter was able to give herself daily injections during her pregnancy. Today she started her injections again for a new baby due in July.

If you have a family history of DVTs, strokes or other clotting disroders, please get genetic testing for these clotting genes. The testing can help you prevent the heartbreak of miscarriage. All OBGYNs should ask about clotting disorders when getting a family history.

We're in that same position with our daughter.

She's 18 and developed RVOT (a type of tachycardia) that necessitated a cardiac ablation. The ablation resulted in 5 blood clots in her right leg.

She has been on blood thinning medication since August and will have to undergo another procedure next summer because the first one was not fully successful (heart procedure FAIL).

In the meantime, she has tested positive for a clotting disorder twice (over three months) and will be tested again in January.

We're hoping that when the time comes for her to have kids, she will be able to successfully carry them!

There are several conditions that come under this category, among them Factor-5/Leiden and hyperhomocysteinemia. Some them do not require any kind of injections to combat; large doses of oral Folic Acid will sometimes be sufficient.

I would agree that it is always a good idea to check for MTHFR, even if there is no family history of clotting disorders. Even if you are not homozygous for this mutation, higher doses of Folic Acid are almost always a good idea. (I am heterozygous, but had repeated miscarriages. After quadrupling my intake of FA I never had another. It might be a coincidence, or it might not, but like chicken soup, I figure it didn't hurt.)
