Generally Admitted to Hospital?

Has anyone experienced just being admitted to a hospital for a week or so to try to figure out what is going on? My current provider (sadly leaving) has suggested it (and I thought of it before she mentioned it). Is it possible? Helpful (or likely to find help)? I'm just so completely out of sorts with no real path forward.

I am sorry you aren’t feeling well. I personally haven’t but my mom was. I think it depends on what kinds of tests need to be run, and how the patient needs to be monitored during and after the tests. If they can run tests without hospitalization, they probably would do that first, but if you have already done that (since your doctor is recommending this, I assume you have) then it is one way to find out what is going on. Sending you positive thoughts for a quick diagnosis and recovery.

No I haven’t, but why not. It may help give you the answers you need. You have nothing to lose, and possibly something to gain ?

If you are talking about a psychiatric hospital, then yes - usually in conjunction with a psychiatrist, on their recommendation. But a lot depends, I think, on what’s actually going on. (And that’s between you and your doctor.)

If you’re talking about a regular hospital, for a medical or surgical issue, that might be harder without something you can actually put your finger on, like medical symptoms, or a broken bone, etc. ERs are overly full with patients waiting for beds, so unless there’s a very good reason, they don’t just admit people to the hospital.

Good luck with whatever you’re facing. Feel free to PM me if I can help you.

I meant physical, but I appreciate the help.

If it is physical I would make sure your insurance will cover this. Mine would not cover a week hospital stay for testing. I would not want you to come out of the hospital stay with a lot of medical debt.

No, but I am sorry you are not getting answers.

Writing on here because it is very important that one collects reports on any testing. Here we have Pocket Health (I think you have that in the States) and one hospital has its own free portal for reports. I had sepsis twice and on one of the many scans the radiologist in the hospital picked up something unrelated. And noted it, which does not always happen. They tend to concentrate only on the matter at hand.

Seven years later that thorough work by the radiologist helped me advocate for testing in an area. And it was an absolute key to an ongoing puzzle. I only bought a group of them because I did not want to go into appointments blind. And have as much understanding as I could. That choice really paid off in ways I never even imagined.
So please keep any tests, scans, blood work in good order. They can provide focus even years later. No one is bringing these tests together to investigate the way we can for ourselves.

I had to share the news from another post, as many of you had been gracious enough to comment:

Thank you all. I cannot pretend that my depression has abated. It has, in fact, gotten worse. However, I'm feeling a bit joyous right this moment because I have a tiny bit of energy (which I haven't for a while - I keep meaning to come over and post). After 2 years (something happened August 12, 2023) of intense physical pain and symptoms, I finally have some progress. My spinal cord has been softening due to a lack of blood (called mylomalacia). There may be other problems and this was only discovered once my legs lost feeling and my right side has lost feeling most of the time. They would like to do surgery though I genuinely don't think I can (I don't have extended family, community, or health insurance - and this would take me out of work for a while). But, to have a diagnosis and have the dr sit beside me and say, "You weren't making it up - you've been in a lot of pain and it's real and it's right here" and can point to it - I bawled.

So, on behalf of the synergistic The Walt Disney Company, I'm going to bring you a Simpsons reference:
