I have an under the cabinet GE Spacemaker microwave, which means I paid more for it than a usual microwave. Its is not heating. Is it worth having someone fix it or should I look for a replacement.

How old is it? Under warranty?

We have one as well. I'd be not so inclined to let it go since it was so expensive without someone looking at it first.

I think microwaves are one of those things that you just have to bite the bullet and replace. Even if a microwave continues to work, as it ages, it becomes less airtight. If it's brand new, see about warranties and such. If it's more than a few years old, let it go. Microwaves sell for pretty cheap nowadays.

I think its probably four years old or more, no warranty.

My 4 year old microwave oven/hood combo just bit the dust -- everything worked except that it would not heat. Cost of repairman to come look at it $100. We bought a new one (and the extended warranty).

Okay, I have one, and there is a big gap in the door, the handle fell off and DH drilled in a new one, and now there is a one inch hole in the corner of the door. I guess I'll stop radiating my family and buy a new one, and pay for installation, but it kills me, because it works great (it's over 10 years old). I really should buy a new one, right? It also really stinks (literally) since last week, when a microwavable rice cooker caught on fire.

I just called an appliance repair man who doesn't fix them, but he recommends another company. He did say, without looking of course, that what usually goes is the magnatron and it runs about $160, with the repair. I think I will look on line. Seems pointless to get pay that much for a new one. Also, I need white right now. At some point I will be redoing the kitchen and need stainless steel. Maybe a cheaper one that sits on the counter.

Okay, another update! I called the company that the first guy recommended. Glad I did. He said to look inside and check he date. (Jan 2005) The magnatron, the thing that goes bad, actually has a ten year warranty and he will research it for me, put that thing under the warranty, replace another part at the same time, and the bill is usually, with tax, around $110. So that is what I am going to do!.

That really doesn't seem safe. Time for a new microwave, methinks.

Not built-in ones. They're pretty pricey.

Sure but you can replace a built-in one with a cheaper counter one as Dawn has considered for like $50.

For less than $150, I am getting it fixed. I really am not going to like the appearance of a counter unit, even for a year.

Yes I see that now. I apologize. I thought you were looking for suggestions and offered one.

Lucky for you. We replaced ours not too long ago. It wouldn't work with the door closed, only with the door open :confused3 . So I got my Stainless one and just lived with it not matching for a few months. I took from Nov-Feb to get them all replaced, but it was worth it.

If he can't fix the magnatron or it ends up costing more, look on eBay for your same unit. Someone might have one they never put up & used. This way, it will fit in the same old fittings.

I was just going to say it is probably the magnatron tube. I've had mine go a couple of times. GE has a known problem with them. The first time it went, my Dad has his go around that same time. The tech told my Dad that they were having problems with that particular make and manufacture date (we bought ours at the same time) so it was repaired for free. The second time they denied ever having a problem with that particular model/date and charged me to have it fixed. Next time, I'm going to replace with a brand other than GE. Their customer service is horrible.

I replaced my GE spacesaver micro/convection over (Over the stove w/vent) a couple of years ago with a Kenmore - love the Kenmore. I didn't go with the convection, we never used it. I think it was approx $400 or so. My DS and DH installed it (they also installed the first one) Just in case the repair thing doesn't work out.

Not only that, but I wouldn't want a gaping hole in my cabinet where the old one used to be.

I have had the joy of replacing 2 magnetrons on 2 different GE Spacemakers about 5 years apart. You think they would do something about this known problem. We did have GE take care of it both times. Didn't have issues with their customer service. The second repair guy wasn't very nice though.

I have one of these too. I have wondered what I would do when it went "poof". I imagine I will have to replace it. Mine was built with the house about 10 years ago and is still working.
