I really need to make a 7 mos. ressie at GCV for Sept. 2010. If sales begin at the end of 2009, will I have a shot at making a ressie at 7 mos. for Sept. 2010? Otherwise, I'll have to pay the pts. at DLH or PP.

I think the consensus is that since there are only 50 rooms there, that unless you own points at VGC, you might not have too much luck at the 7 month window.

While I agree with the above, Sept is a slow time at DL (with weekend rates last year for APs as low as $129) and if you only need a night or 2 and are flexible with your dates, you may find some availabilty. -- Suzanne

I wouldn't plan on it. 50 rooms makes GCV the smallest DVC resort to-date and the only DVC resort in Disneyland. September 2010 is also within a 12 months of it opening. I am sure that between the members who buy into it and those who want it on the 7-month window, that the 1st year demand on this resort is going to be very high.

You can try, but plan booking PP or DLH on reservation points if that fails. (The same thing will likely happen to the Grand Cali as it last did for the AKL . . . the moment a Disney hotel goes DVC, you can't use reservation points there anymore.)

I only plan to stay 4 days, M-TH. Staying with my son over the weekend. So would I follow the same system that we have in place now for making the ressies at 7 mos, or do the dates change when a new resort is just opening? I believe now I would call in March for a Sept. 7 mos. ressie. That means the resort would only be open for 3-4 months.

When new resorts open they give owners a few weeks ahead of nonowners to book, even if it is 7 months or less when bookings open.

The resort is supposed to open in late 2009. As such, they should start taking reservations no later than the summer of 2009, and they will certainly be accepting bookings in March '10 when the booking window opens for September '10.

DVC sells enough points such that a resort could be full nearly year-round. But you just don't see 100% of a resort's owners using their points to book 8+ months ahead of time at their Home. With September being a typically slow month (at least it is at WDW), I'd say there's a decent shot of getting this reservation. Just be prepared to call at 9am day-by-day.

We heard from CM's at the CA DVC member event, that they expect the GCV to be booked solid by owners with the 11 month window for at least the first 36 months. The feedback they are getting from current west coast members, is that they are all rabid over GCV. Every CM I chatted with said DVC expects CA will sell out to Founding members, shutting out all the rest of we CA DVC members. After that, getting a ressie at 7 months would be no problem, especially if a second DVC at, or near DLR is up and running.
They also said that it wouldn't be impossible to book at 7 months, or even the day before, as people do cancel reservations all the time.

I try to keep my cynicism in check, but when folks selling timeshares tell me they expect the units to be completely unavailable to anyone who doesn't buy a new timeshare from them, that cynnicsim bell just keeps going off.

Even though VGC will be the smallest DVC, they still have about a million points to sell. It's inconceivable to me that founding members will snatch them all up.

Yes, some of the CM's were high pressure salespeople. I didn't expect that from this event.

I also doubt they will all be gone in that 2-week period...but it may not be long after that. Particularly when you factor in the hype DVC seems to be generating. There's nothing that will prompt hasty decisions quite like getting people worked-up to believe they may miss-out.

If there are 1,000,000 points, it would only take 6260 people adding the maximum of 160 in order to sell-out the resort. What we don't know (or at least I don't know) is how many people will have access to that priority period. I'd guess no more than 10 - 15,000. And, I can't imagine that fully 1/3 to 1/2 of the people who have ever purchased points from DL will immediately decide to spend $17k on Grand Californian points.

But once the leftover points are made available to all, they won't last long.

I agree, but just to play devil's advocate: what I understand was that with 50 rooms there will only be around 600k points, and there are a number of people will buy several 50 point chunks just so that they can flip them on resale.

Someone may not buy 160 points at GCV (or VGC, whatever it is) to add to their portfolio, but if a founding member sees that there's going to be a big draw from other DVC members, or those who aren't in yet buy specifically want GCV, then the driver to buy multiple 50 point contracts and flip them for a huge "supply/demand" profit will be there.

I'm personally planning on buying 50 points (or so) so that I can go once every 2-3 years, but I could see people doing otherwise to make a buck.

Just my 2 cents...

I'm not sure members will be able to do too much of this since the Founding Member opportunity grants you one ownership interest up to 160 points under the presale. Of course a member could buy additional interest once it's opened up to the rest of the membership.

As we were leaving the member event, we were somewhat pressured into becoming founding members by a CM. She was telling us we won't be able to buy an add on at GCV if we are not Founding Members, as they will buy up all the points. She insisted that my FLA based guide works with different real estate laws and that we would be shut out of buying points. I was somewhat aghast I was being told this, I still haven't called my guide to find out the truth.

I had the same experience from a DL guide back in March, when we toured the Dream Suite. When I spoke with my FL guide she did some checking with some higher ups and said no it will not sell out to Founding Members.

When DVC lowered the AKV buy in to 100 points, I started a new master contract in order to change our UY so now I'm in the Founding Members. I wouldn't have added on if it wasn't for wanting our VGC points on an AUG UY instead of FEB as we typically travel in the Fall. I've already sold one of our two small SSR contracts to offset the change.
