Not going to lie reading all the people who are planning to "boycott" this movie on Facebook because of this has me a tad worried. Not to be political or anything but these are the same people that have announced their boycott towards the Oscars, Starbucks, CNN, Nordstrom, SNL, Oreos (not nabisco though), Kellogg's, Doritos, the Super Bowl, Meryl Streep, Harry Potter, Hollywood, Netflix, Hamilton, 84 Lumber, and several hundred others. I guess I'm worried that this is going to backfire heavily on them

I'm drawing a blank. Who? And how would it backfire on them?

The fact that this is still an issue in 2017 shows just how we still have to go.

As far as I'm concerned, the correct response to this should be "Okay honey, sure, now leave me alone, I'm cooking eggs.."

It saddens me that people are still so desperate to make sure other people aren't allowed to be themselves and be happy.

What I'm questioning is:

Why do any of you care? Who cares?? I thought we had evolved as a society where we don't care about this kind of thing.

No one had a fit when Moana didn't have a love interest as a plot to the story so who cares?! Disney makes movies to its demographics. The world is evolving. Disney should evolve too.

Love is love. I mean, we're fine with the fact that this story alludes to beastiality and Stockholm syndrome, I think it's silly to even have a characters sexuality be an issue.

Maybe I'm missing the point here. Perhaps there's another reason this has been brought up, but I for one, am just fine watching a modern version that is relatable to today's cultures

It is still the first time in a major Disney movie that this is being featured - and in many ways Disney reflects (and in some cases leads) American Society so it is a pretty important moment.

People have choices when they go to the movies. ...and it's a HASSLE for families to get to the movies in the first place. Give most people even the slightest reason not to go to a particular movie, and they'll use it. Yes, making a big deal out of this (when it isn't one) will absolutely cost them at the box office. We'll never know how much, but it will cost them.

That was my thought too, I have no idea who that poster is worried about, and why do they think it will back fire heavily on them?

I'm boycotting the movie because I think Emma Watson makes a horrible Belle LOL.
I'm sure she will be great, but in my mind I just don't like her as Belle. I'll definitely see it but I'll wait till it comes out on video.

You're not boycotting it, you're just not going to see it. I don't imagine you'll be trying to persuade others not to go because you don't like Emma Watson as Belle, nor do I imagine you'll be standing outside movie theatres waving placards. Nor do I imagine that if you owned a movie theatre that you'd refuse to show the film because of your personal opinion..

At least, I'd hope you wouldn't...

...or (politics aside) this could be a good thing...

Because the live action remakes of every cartoon - including all the animal ones - has already gotten out of hand.

They are burning up their brands like logs in a fire for a short term financial endgame. No creativity and thought went into these and for those who like history: that's EXACLTY what the problems were the last two times Disney started to falter/fail...

Any suit can make Tranformers 13 for the Chinese.

If these live actions failed...would it really be that bad?

If they failed because they were rubbish, no, it wouldn't be that bad.. If it failed because the general public can only accept love between a man and a woman*, then that would be quite sad.

*excluding all those guys that have zero issue looking up two women together, that is.

Fringe zealot backlash is not enough to make these fail...let's be honest...

Or did we start really caring about the backwoods that say and do these silly things all of the sudden?

I'm being honest...I'm just horrified that Big Shot Bobby is so desperate for golden parachute that he's emptying the cupboard

Personally, I welcome the opportunity to encourage the dialogue with my kids. My really little kids likely wouldn't watch a non-animated version, and I would love for my older kids to see an openly gay character in a show and ask me questions. They don't have a lot of exposure to openly gay adults (no family members or close friends that they know)-dh and I have gay friends but they live far away and haven't seen the kids recently. This is a great opportunity to chat with my kids about acceptance and equality, even if the character isn't ideal-still opens the door to chat.

Snow White from development to release took nearly half of a decade. Walt wanted it right regardless of potential box office losses because he new it would be the 1st of its kind and wanted it right. He knew it would make a statement. Similarly, I think Disney can afford this extremely important statement over some "losses". And I'm pretty sure they have the best producers, animators, editors, sound engineers, composers, directors, lawyers and accountants thinking about this. I'm also pretty sure a decent percentage of those crew are friends of Le Fou's and are very proud to be part of this release, regardless of any backlash that they were smart enough to know would come...as they live in the same world we do. This movie looks awesome :thumbsup2

In a film where a woman is in a relationship with an animal, and there's a talking clock, the fact that there's a fella who has a rustle of taffeta about him in it is what gets people up in arms...

Nowt so queer as folk, eh? Pun totally intended.

Also, I think the phrase 'Friend of Le Fou' should become part of modern vocabulary.. :)

It annoys me because it seems so ridiculous that this even has to be of any relevance nowadays. To me being gay is on the same level as having blue eyes. Unfortunately, many others do see it as a big deal which is hard for me to understand.

I do understand that people want to be accepted and included but I'm still not sure if this belongs in a fairy tale. I mean this from the political statement perspective but I guess that if it's OK for actors then it's OK for Disney. :)

So I am gay and married. I have been with my husband for 21 years. We have twin 6 year old girls. What I find depressing is that there are people who think that they need to hide their kids from my family. That my family is a scary or terrible thing. Believe me, my family is just the same as yours. We love and support each other. Simple as that. Why is that such a bad thing to show a kid. Somehow all the kids in my girls' class have no problem with it, so why do you have an issue? You can talk about religion, but that is very selective thought. There are numerous families out there that do not follow your religion or look like your ideal (single parent families, unmarried couples, people on their second or third marriages) so why only focus on the LGBT couple? Depressing and frustrating that we even have to discuss this and that there are polls on this site about whether it is ok to let children know that I and my family exist. All I can say is that my marriage and family are as valid as everyone else's and therefore I have as much right to see my family represented in movies as you do. Disney movies are about love, respect, support, friendship and being who you truly are meant to be. Seems some people lost that message along the way somewhere.

Beautifully said.
