Gave Garden Grill A Second Chance-OOPS

As Garden Grill has always been one of our favorite restaurants, we refused to believe all the hundreds of negative postings we read about how bad it had become. So out of loyalty and misbelief we included it on our last trip this past week and all I have to say is WHAT A MISTAKE! All the postings were right, this once great restaurant has gone down the tubes.

Even without comparison to the great menu before the renovation, this place serves some of the most expensive and worse food in Epcot. The menu was obviously changed with only two things in mind: microwaveability and cheapness!

The thick garden salad with ranch dressing has been replaced by a bitter tasting wilted assortment of leafy things covered in a mouth puckering vinegarette dressing. The wonderful sunflower and pumpkin bread that used to come with flavored butter are now chewy breadsticks with microwaved "dipping" sauces which range from lumpy to oily.

If we had been at a regular restaurant in any city, we would have walked out when we were given the menu. But being at Disney's mercy and willing out of loyalty to try anything once we reluctantly chose our entrees.

No more unlimited catfish, stuffing, chicken, steak, potatoes or turkey. You now are forced to choose between one of a half dozen entrees that are reminiscent of the old TV dinners. Small portions of not very good tasting food with almost no choice or nutritional value. Between the seven of us, we had virtually everything on the menu and not one of us was happy with our choice. I had a stringy chunk of steak with some rock hard mashed potatoes and three string beans. There has been some discussion on the boards as to whether or not you can ask for seconds but it really doesn't matter because most people barely finish their first portion even though its tiny by comparison. The food really is that bad.

To make matters worse, even though there were empty tables, the service was horrible. Our waiter was good natured enough but explained that Disney fired all the bus staff so wait staff now had to serve, get drinks, bus, clean their own tables AND scrape plates. He disappeared for long periods of time (probably doing dishes and taking out the trash) as we desperately wanted more water and ice tea.

The great cobbler and "worms and dirt" desert has been replaced by warm Bosco, stale pound cake and canned pineapple chunks. The desert reminded me of something a bunch of college kids would put together during a midnight munchie raid on a refrigerator. Not at all a worthy desert but it did complement well the poor entrees. At least their lousy food was consistent from appetizer through desert.

Even worse insult to injury, they had the nerve to raise their prices and consider children nine and above to be adults! $25.00 to feed a nine year old who barely picked at his inedible entree. They really should be ashamed.

I feel like an absolute sucker for not having listened to the posts I read. So to all the regular patrons of Garden Grill I implore you to stay away. Only a boycott and dramatic drop in business will get their attention and change things back to the great down on the farm style meals they used to serve. It used to be a nice country style meal - now it's a third world country style meal.

To all those who are thinking of trying the place out for old times sake (thinking it can't have gotten that bad) I say DON'T DO IT. Save your money - don't be a sucker. It is really as bad as everyone says.

To those who want to try this place for the first time, I assure you that you can do a lot better at a dozen other places in Epcot. Even if you have no basis for comparison to the old format, you will be disappointed in the quality, quantity and price of food and the poor service.

The only thing Garden Grill has going for it is its great revolving scenery (none of which makes any sense now that the menu has changed) and the characters coming to the tables. But even with that be careful. When Dale came over to pay a visit, his costume was so dirty that none of us wanted to shake hands with him. It was a little gross. We also noticed the same to be true of the other characters, except Mickey. Perhaps Disney has them also doing dishes in the kitchen or maybe the waiters are now supposed to take the costumes home and wash them with their own laundry. These guys needed a bath, especially being around food.

It's sad to see such a major change to what used to be such a great place. What were they thinking? I wonder if the people who actually put these meals together ever sit down and have to eat them. I think too many fresh out of school accountants are trying to make changes that do not need to be changed and are getting involved in areas in which they have no experience.

Please let your voice be heard by staying away from the Garden Grill until they bring back the old format.

Shame on Disney!

Poor Garden Grill.

I remember back when it first changed our resident restaurant reviewer extraordinaire Forever42 posted pics of the food and everything looked so unappetizing.

If you were charged adult price for a 9yr old, you were overcharged. Adult prices are for 10+.

Has everyone that posted bad reviews sent an email to Disney about this? Hopefully they will do something about it. Maybe time for a new chef?

We ate at GG in 1999 and enjoyed the wonderful family style feast. Part of the attraction for us was that some of the food had actually been produced at The Land pavillion.

We were disappointed to read all the negative comments and appreciate your imput. With so many other great restaurants to choose from, we will not be returning unless the reviews improve. :(

Welcome to the DIS!

I'm sorry that you had such a terrible experience at Garden Grill, especially since it was a favorite of yours before. Thank you for sharing your experience with us though so that we are forewarned.

My family really enjoyed GG before the changes, but we have made the decision not to go back unless we start hearing some positive reviews. I normally like to make up my own mind about a restaurant even if it gets mixed reviews. But when virtually all the reviews are terrible, I choose to avoid that restaurant.

I want to thank you for your review and add that I fully agree with everything you said. After trying it again since the renovation, Garden Grill is permanently off my list. Food quality, portion sizes and service were all terrible. I like your Bosco comment but I think it's insulting to Bosco - that's a good chocolate syrup!

Not to nit pick but they only offer 5 entree choices, not six but you're right - every one of them can be found in your local supermarket freezer section where they only cost $5.99 instead of $25.00.

As far as complaining as one of the posters suggested, we had the opportunity to voice our disappointment to one of the roving managers ,face to face. He told us they changed the menu because "the majority of our guests requested a healthier menu". What a line of BS. As he was talking I realized that he was probably one of the guys responsible for the new menu and that any negative comment would never get to anyone in charge. He and his other cohorts who live in their own reality vaccuum will only ever relay comments that support their poor decisions.

Only a boycott of Garden Grill will let our voices be heard.

Image how the the poor people who are paying 30.99 an adult for CP dinner pckage will feel. I thought about it and quickly changed my mind. Never ate there but heard the complaints load and clear in Season's food court after people were leaving so decided to nor chance it. Thanks for letting me know I was right. :goodvibes

pirate: Thanks for bursting my bubble. We were going to try it for our first time in October. My DS4 was excited about seeing Mickey at a character dinner. I guess we'll have to change our plans. I wanted to avoid CM. I've seen to many bad reviews about the dinner.

I had a really odd experience - my server was lurking, waiting to see my reaction to the mushroom ravioli (four floating in what looks like a large bowl of tomato soup but is a very thin tomato sauce with some veggies). It was ok, but I found the sauce a little sweet.

He admitted to lurking and said that he had only heard disappointed reactions to the dish. The chef was very excited and wanted my reaction - I tried to be diplomatic about the 'unusual' presentation.

I also found it odd that at 530pm during July the restaurant was 1/3 empty.

I don't recall the bread, but knowing me I found it enjoyable; the salad dressing was rather sour like we have in Germany; didn't do dessert so I can't comment, although they did offer to bring out some fruit in place of the chocolate foundue, if I would like.

On the other hand, I was disappointed that my touring never brought me to the Sunshine Seasons around lunch/dinner - I am excited with all of the veggie sides and hope that the menu doesn't change....

Your review rocks, first of all.

Secondly, I'm sorry you had such a terrible exp, I hate that feeling of wasted money - esp since your family probably left hungry and you still had to find something to eat!

We'll be steering clear!

Salad--what salad--I guess our server forgot ours (what with doing the dishes and all)! Not that it sounds like a loss!. I have to say to OP I couldn't have written a more honest review myself, and you really hit it all straight on. Such a shame! I too went for the same nostolgic reasons, I will not make that mistake again. :rolleyes2

What a shame...but thanks for the review. We always have eaten here (before the changes) and loved the food on the platter, the unusual location and the characters.

Why fix something that isnt broken???

I do implore everyone who has eaten here and suffered a disappointment to email Disney. The only way they will change it, is if enough people complain and they see that no one visits here anymore.

Enjoyed reading your review ~ Thanx for posting.

We have only eaten at the GG once and really enjoyed it. Shame when they change something that was wonderful into something quite forgettable

Thanks for the great review. I made the same mistake this past week. Just had to see for myself. It was a $70.00 lesson! Please people spend your money elsewhere.

I always wondered where all those airline food chefs went once they stopped serving meals in flights. Now I kow, they're alive and well and working at garden Grill planning and cooking menus. The only thing missing are the plastic utensils.

Bring back the old garden Grill

I tried the Garden Grill on its first early pre-opening nights. They hadn't even advertised they were open so there was very few people in the restaurant.
As a result, while the new menu food was blah, and the mural on the middle wall makes me want to cry...
"Where are the lovely Sunflowers?!?"

The character interaction that night was amazing. The servers were attentive and playful. Pluto and Chip and Dale were all running around borrowing things and then being chased by one of the servers. But this was their first night serving food to guests.

If it wasn't for the character interaction that evening I would have been upset.

What WDW has done to this restaurant makes me want to cry in general. This was always my favorite spot to eat in EPCOT. :(

We also will NOT be doing GG. After Forever42, I had an inkling. Then every other review came back. While the DIS is not the whole of attendance Disney experiences, it can be considered a sampling. If nobody in this sampling like the new GG, I wonder how many people really do like it and will go back?

I think the fact that the restaurant is 1/3 full during busy season speaks for itself. I know that there were several instances where it was a good thing we had a PS, because the old GG was packed!

My family of 2Adults 2 Children visited the GG in June. We had never eaten there, so I didnt have much to compare to.

We had just left Soarin and we stopped at the GG Podium to see if they had Lunch seatings available. The CM said they were booked solid all day. We started to leave and then I called DINE on my cell and she said they had a PS for right then. So we went back to the podium and were seated.

We saw the prices posted out front but we thought it was still a family style meal with additional portions like LTT. We looked at the menu, confirmed with our waitress, and got up to leave but then we decided "It cant be that bad, and maybe it will be worth it", so we sat back down.

Mind you the restaurant only had about 6 tables occupied. I guess they were short staffed so that was all they could handle. They were still turning people away at the podium.

It was a $70 Lunch with DDE discount and I couldnt put my finger on it, but you hit it dead on. I just knew we would not be returning.

Our server was rushed and MIA. She seemed irritated when we asked for more pineapple (the boys didnt eat their $12 kids meal),

I think Mickey and Dale were either flirting with each other or really angry at each other because they were literally chasing each other around the restaurant popping bandanas.

You could tell that the potatoes and vegetable sat on the plate waiting for your choice of entree, which they slapped on top. I agree about the nasty dips for the bread. The textures were all wrong the cheese sauce was gloopy. The chocolate syrup was runny, and our pound cake was stale too.

Oh! And what salad? We didnt get one either!

And just for GP, we asked about the rehitching ceremony and that's gone too!

Thanks again for putting words to our experience!

We ate there shortly after it re-opened.
We did not see it as that bad. But certainly was not a favorite. There are too many other better places to eat in Epcot.
We also were wondering about the restaurant barely having guests, yet making several wait or turning them away entirely. :confused3
And that was supposedly before the firing of the bus staff.

That seems very puzzling. Like they want to be doomed. :confused3

I like the kind of salad they serve. Yummy

Just found my post. It was in early May.

When I saw this posting, I just had to sign up and put my two cents in. I thought I was alone and felt like a sucker when I gave the new garden Grill a try after its renovation. I felt like an idiot for being so ripped off, I was embarrased to say anything.

I'm sure that there are those who will find the food acceptable. There is no accounting for taste. But by anyone's standards, this place is not what it used to be.

Garden Grill used to represent a good old fashioned down on the farm type meal with plenty of fresh salad and vegetables (some actually grown in The Land) and heaping portions of American style food, Perhaps the fried catfish, mashed potatoes and stuffing didn't offer the best nutritional value. Maybe the great chicken, turkey and juicy strips of steak were a litlle hard on the diet. And so what if the pumpkin seed bread wasn't on the Atkins Plan - the place served a great very American farm style meal. I mean worms and dirt? It's not exactly French cuisine. It was all as American as the scenery that passed before you as you revolved.

Now under the guise of "improving" the menu, all they did was cheapen everything to a point where it's no longer worth the price. You just know that the meal was planned in a budget office, not a kitchen. All designed to be cheap and quick, Taste and quality didn't matter. Theme didn't matter. Even appearance didn't matter. I agree with the other postings who said that all the entrees can be found in your supermarket freezer section.

Garden Grill is no longer and American didning experience, it represents the worst of many different cuisines.

To make this restaurant true to its current theme, they should replace the scenes of farms and grasslands with scenes of accounting offices and banks. Only then will the food truly match the environment in which it was created.

The Garden Grill is the "New Coke" of Disney. And like "New Coke", I hope someone realizes their mistake and quietly returns things to the way they were supposed to be, firing some geniuses along the way.

I support any boycott of Garden Grill not only for garden Grill's sake but to show Disney that people aren't as stupid as they think. "A fool and his money are soon parted" should be the motto placed over the new mural that wiped out the old beautiful sunflowers.
