We are considering going to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area for Father's Day weekend. We have heard weekends are very busy. How busy will Father's Day weekend be? This is our first visit to that area and we plan to spend most of the time at the National Park but still want to go into either town in the evenings.

TIA!

I've not been there over Father's day weekend, but in general summer weekends are busy there. It's doable so don't not go because of that, just have a good idea of what you want to do and where it's located. Traffic can be a pain in the rear there.

It is no busier than any other summer weekend. As long as you are prepared for very congested streets and a wait for seating at restaurants, you will be fine. Have fun!

Waiting in traffic....a bunch...go to titanic place when stuck in traffic...we did...cool place if you like history stuff....do alpine slide too

Hope you have a fabulous trip to celebrate Father's Day!!

Anyone have recommendations from locals or repeat visitors on what to do that is relatively free or really cheap when visiting the area that could work to fill in 4 or so days.

We are looking for a future trip with about 20 different family members there ourselves too during the summer months and will be visiting for 8 days or so. We all don't have to do everything together as we have a wide variety of ages, interests and budgets. My ideal would be to get the information, available days/times for the activity (whitewater may not be available daily), and approximate cost so when deciding all details could be known instead of getting to a business and having sticker shock.

Already on the agenda for all is:
Dollywood (2 days) Splash Country (1 day possibly 2 for the kids)
A dinner show - undecided on this one still...but will most probably want to have 2 or 3 choices for people to decide on/go to.
Go carts - which one to go to that is fun but best value for your dollar...
Gatlinburg - alpine slide - which one? The tram and ski lift don't seem to have more than one choice.

Some want to go ziplining and white water rafting -- recommendations on what companies to use would be great or which companies to steer clear from...

Miniature Golf -- any favorites? In Ft Walton Beach, there is an old/fun/classic/cheesy course called Goofy Golf that we absolutely adore and love. Its got to be from the 50's. Its cheap and super fun and never miss going to it even if we are vacationing in Pensacola/Seaside/Destin areas. Do they have any gems/local favorites like this in the Sevierville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area? If not, what's some good ones?

Free/Cheap ideas
-- This is where I need the most help.

Cades Cove - how bad is this drive in the mountains? Personally not too keen on mountain roads but other people can drive but would like to know how scary it is as its only one way traffic...

Gatlinburg walking down the strip and visiting the local shoppes but are there some you shouldn't miss. Definitely want taffy and fudge.

Hiking? But where if you aren't experienced trail people? Everyone can walk.

Is there tubing down any of the rivers? Do you just go buy a tube and go to the public area to go float down the river?

Restaurants -- any favorites? any not worth the time/money? any local diner/dives for BBQ?

Not really a big planner but feel like we need to have some sort of idea before hand so we can get some decent prices, good discounts or look for groupon codes for the summer.

Thanks so much for any advice!!!

Oh, how fun! We love the PF area. Summer weekends are always really busy, but Gatlinburg parking is the biggest issue. I would find a good place to park because you'll want to get out and walk around; you can't really drive around Gatlinburg and see everything. We usually park in the aquarium parking garage (it costs a little but totally worth it) because it's centrally located.

We go to Dollywood often; I wouldn't spend more than 1 full day there, but we've also seen it several times. If you want to be able to see all the shows, etc, it might take 2 days. It's a pretty small park, though. You can definitely find Groupon deals to make the trip more affordable.
For dinner shows - we love Dixie Stampede! I've also wanted to go to the Comedy Barn but we're never there without the kids.
Mini golf - we haven't been, but there are lots and lots of options. I'd drive around and see which one suits your needs best. You'll be able to see them from the main road.
Cades Cove - it's beautiful! The mountain roads aren't really the problem - it's the people who park right along the road and run out in front of the animals to take photos. Totally worth it to see for the scenery. Very annoying with the crowds.
Another fun thing we've done that was very cheap (and not crowded) - we drove through the artist strip. There are lots of little pottery shops and things, so fun to see.
I think you can buy a pass that will let you get into all the Ripley's attractions, and there are a BUNCH of them. That would fill up 4 days! We also love the Titanic Museum.
For a really cheap food plan, I'd get fried chicken and other picnic foods from Food City, and take it up the mountain for a picnic.
There are so many great restaurants. Calhoun's is my favorite, but it's pricey.

If you don't mind driving just a bit for one afternoon, I would take the party to see the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. It's about an hour + half drive from Gatlinburg, I think. It is a full day activity that is amazing to see.

Thanks - hope to hear more helpful hints too!

Comedy Barn - is this not suitable for children?
Dixie Stampede is sort of like Medieval Times?? - some have been to the later before and didn't know how it relates.

Cades Cove - good to know the moutain roads aren't the issue - didn't want to feel like I was driving without a guard rail along a very narrow path.

The artist strip - that sounds really neat. Is it located in Pigeon Forge/Sevierville or Gatlinburg? Or in another area. Got to find out more about this!!

Food City must be a grocery store?

The Ripley's attraction pass is now on my list of things to find out more details - didn't know they even had such a thing.

Calhoun's - what type of restaurant is this? Steakhouse? I'm sure there may be a night or so that some of the older people may want to go out together for a great meal and the younger ones may just want to go to the strip for go carts. So that may work...

Biltmore Estates - we've already been and hadn't really thought about that but will get the information for it for the others to think about.

As for meals - we are planning on eating breakfast in the cabin/house rental itself. Not sure how much other cooking/eating will be done there so we will need a few recommendations if we decide to eat meals that aren't national restaurant chains. Heard about the Apple barn.

Joining in. We are going at the end of July. Also interest in knowing more about where this artist strip is located. I would love some pottery. Also, the comedy barn is definitely suitable for children. It is a family show. They will take children from the audience and bring them on stage. My son and nephew were chosen one year. One of our favorites is the Hatfield & McCoy show.

Thanks for the link - I looked at it.

Was really interested in the $3.00 per person tubing - anyone know about this?
And also the trout pond? Kids would definitely want to do that one also.
White water rafting for $17 adult - when I was looking around so prices nowhere near that rate.

And it looks like Bennett's for BBQ was recommended.

I don't know where they found such a great rate for rafting either. We always go with the company Rafting in the Smokies and got an online rate for $30 pp from $42 I think.

Here is a link to the artist thing - you basically can just drive along the road and stop at the little artisan shops. It's really cool!! http://www.gatlinburgcrafts.com/map.html

Apple Barn is yummy. Very homey, comfort food (kind of like a Cracker Barrel). Bennett's is good.
Comedy Barn is def good for kids, but mine always want to go to Dixie Stampede. It's a Dolly Parton run show with country music, horse riding, buffalo, etc. It's fun. You eat with your hands (no silverware is available). My kids love it!

Thanks, we are going to check it out!

Besides Cades Cove, check out Roaring Fork as well. Both are beautiful drives. If some of your party likes to drink, head over to one of the moonshine shops for free samples (w00t! Free booze!) and see how it's made. Smoky Mountain Trout House offers trout just about any way you can imagine and it was delicious. If you'd like to try and catch your own, head out to English Mountain Trout Farm and Grill. Kids love this place and they cook your catch.

I've also pulled up the link for the artisan shops (thanks) and have to google the trout farm information as well as driving Roaring Fork.

I did read somewhere starting this weekend that the trolley's will be free in Gatlinburg during the summer - yay! And that there will be daily evening entertainment from 6pm-11pm downtown.

Has anyone seen the new magic show with Darren Romero or is the one at the wonderworks/ripley's better?

We've added the Titanic to our list of things to do - it seems to get nice recommendations from all.

Right now we are considering the Hatfield/McCoys, Comedy Barm or Dixie Stampede show. Not going to do them all but based on what everyone wants between our entire group all may be seen. I still don't know which one I would want to do yet.

Do they have any Shogun's/Kobe style restaurants around? Sushi restaurants that are recommended? And what about Chinese cuisine?

And how is the Island? That huge ferris wheel. Got to see if there is some freebie entertainment to go watch.

I'm planning a late July trip and am a little confused (and worried) about traffic. We're going Sunday-Thursday. I currently have a hotel in Pigeon Forge and plan to do Smokies National Park and other "outdoorsy" activities by day and "touristy" stuff by night (dinner shows, arcades, etc). Is PF the best place to stay or is Gatlinburg? With so much to do, should I add Saturday night to my stay or is it just too crazy then?

Thanks for all the previous recommendations! I'm still trying to narrow it all down...

There is a place in Pigeon Forge on Teaster Lane called Little Tokyo. It has hibachi/sushi, and is pretty good.
I haven't been to the Island but my friends have talked about it --- they LOVE it and said it would be fun to just go there and nowhere else!

Just plan enough time to get to your destination. The traffic isn't really that bad in comparison to big cities. We're just not that used to it around here. :)
We prefer to stay in Pigeon Forge because it's easier to get around by car, but if you are planning to get out and walk the town at night, you might want to stay in Gatlinburg. They are very close to each other, so it doesn't make that much of a difference. You can also take the trolley, as someone else mentioned. It's very affordable and it goes just about everywhere around Gat/PF.
