Hi, we will be flying in June it will be the first time ever. We will have a stroller with us, If we gate check our stroller, does anyone know if that counts as total bagage allowed. If someone could help me with the answer to this I would appreciate it. Thank you

Yes, it does. At least on US and CO.

But each passenger is allowed 2 checked pieces, plus a carry-on (and a small personal item) so it realy shouldn't be a problem. If it is, you might want to rethink how much "stuff" you're lugging along.

I've never had a problem gate checking our stroller.

They have never checked to see how many carry ons we have before taking our stroller.

You get to the gate and they give you a tag they've filled out with your name and flight number and attach it to your stroller. Then right before you get on the plane, you fold it up and leave it at the door. They take care of it. Usually it goes under the plane but if its tiny and they have space in their closets, they'll put it there.

Then when you get off the plane it's sitting there outside the door unless they put it in a closet. Then you may have to remind them and ask them to get it!

That's my experiences with Delta and AA. They have NEVER been a problem.

Beattyfamily--

Just an FYI--I've noticed that the carrires are getting "pickier" about their luggage restrictions since the TSA took over security. Just an FYI.

Also the stroller isn't counted against carryon's, it's counted against total luggage. So if you've got two adults and two kids, that's 8 pieces of checked and four carry on's, plus four small personal items--more than enough even if two of the "checked" pieces are strollers :)

My last trip was October (halloween) and I had no problems.

When are they counting the stroller as a checked piece???? When I check my bags? I've NEVER noticed this. Where are they marking this information? On my boarding pass? Do they then count my carseat that I'm going to use too?

I've just never heard this one before. Maybe it's just that I didn't notice it since we're always under the limit???

Thanks.

Hi,
This came from the Delta site, and since you mentioned you used Delta, this may help.

Infant Items

Children's Baggage Allowance
Below is the baggage allowance information you need to know when traveling with children.

Children traveling:

without charge do not have a baggage allowance.
for 10% of the adult fare (international travel) are allowed one checked bag plus one checked fully collapsible stroller or push-chair.
for 50% or more of the adult fare are entitled to the standard baggage allowance.
Checked Items
You may check child restraint seats and fully collapsible strollers. They do not count toward your allowance of two checked baggage items. Other infant items do count toward the two checked bag allowance.

Child restraint seats and strollers may be used to transport your child throughout the airport. Strollers must be checked at the gate by a Delta agent. Space permitting, you may use any adjacent unoccupied seat to secure the child restraint seat. However, if an empty seat is not available the seat must be checked at the gate by a Delta agent.

Carry-On Items
A fare-paying passenger may carry one bag plus one personal item on the plane. The following infant items may be brought in addition to the one bag carry-on allowance:

Booster Seats or other infant seats
Bassinets
Diaper Bags
Note: Only FAA Approved Child Restraint Devices may be used to secure an infant in a separate seat during take-off or landing. Otherwise, the infant must be held on an adult's lap at these times.

All carry-on items must fit easily in a Size Wise™ unit (approximate dimensions: 22"x14"x9") and must weigh less than 40 pounds.

Please remember that Delta cannot reserve a seat for a child restraint device unless a ticket has been purchased. However, if space is available after boarding is complete, you may use any adjacent unused seat to secure the child restraint device.

Each airline has different rules, if in doubt, go to the site and look under the baggage rules.

I've never had anyone take notice of my stroller. They just ask what you are checking. Since a stroller isn't checked in at that time, I've never mentioned it. It just gets a tag at the gate.

And since it isn't carried on, it doesn't count toward that either.

But I will say that the less you have, the easier it is to get around the airport with a kid in a stroller! Everything has to come out to go through the xray machines, and if one of you gets stuck with a wanding/pat down, the other will have the kid & the stuff. It happened to us twice. Not fun!

For instance, if only you and a lap baby were travelling, and you had a checked bag allowance of 2 items. If you showed up with 2 big suitcases and a stroller, you might be told that there will be a charge to check the second suitcase. The ticket agent would assume that the stroller is going to be gate-checked, but it counts against the total. Of course, if you don't have the stroller in sight when you check the bags, no one would notice.

It's not an issue for most people who buy a ticket for a child, as children seldom use their entire checked baggage allowance.
